TLDR: Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence firm, xAI, is reportedly in discussions to secure new funding that could elevate its valuation to an unprecedented $170 billion to $200 billion. This comes amidst a flurry of recent funding activities and the launch of its new Grok 4 large language model, despite a denial from Musk regarding current fundraising efforts. Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund is anticipated to be a significant investor in this ambitious round.
Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence venture, xAI, is reportedly engaged in talks to raise a substantial new funding round, potentially valuing the company at an astounding $170 billion to $200 billion. The news, primarily reported by the Financial Times on Friday, July 11, 2025, indicates a rapid escalation in the company’s perceived worth, just weeks after its most recent capital injections.
Sources close to the discussions suggest that Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) is poised to play a ‘large role’ in this prospective investment. The PIF already holds indirect exposure to xAI through its investment in Kingdom Holding Company, which previously contributed $800 million to the AI firm. However, Elon Musk himself has publicly countered these reports, stating on X (formerly Twitter) that ‘xAI is not seeking funding right now. We have plenty of capital.’
This potential funding round follows a series of significant financial activities for xAI. Earlier in July, the company reportedly secured $5 billion in funding along with an equal amount in debt. In June, Morgan Stanley disclosed that xAI had obtained $5 billion in debt financing and an additional $5 billion in strategic equity investment. Furthermore, a $6 billion investment round in November 2024 had valued xAI at $50 billion. Another report indicated a $60 billion raise in December 2024, bringing the cumulative total raised to approximately $170 billion, signaling robust investor confidence.
The substantial capital is earmarked for aggressive expansion of xAI’s compute infrastructure, a critical component in the escalating AI arms race. The company reportedly plans to invest $18 billion in this expansion. xAI currently trains its models using a supercomputer named Colossus, located in Memphis. Musk has previously articulated plans to dramatically scale up this system, aiming to increase the number of graphics cards from 200,000 to 1 million.
The reported fundraising discussions coincide with xAI’s recent unveiling of its new flagship large language model, Grok 4, on July 10. xAI claims Grok 4 has set new records across several challenging artificial intelligence benchmarks. Company engineers noted that enhancements to their compute infrastructure during Grok 4’s development led to a six-fold increase in the efficiency of their training workflows. Independent benchmarks from Artificial Analysis appear to corroborate xAI’s claims of Grok 4 outperforming rivals from OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic. Elon Musk lauded Grok 4’s capabilities, stating, ‘with respect to academic questions, Grok 4 is better than PhD level in every subject, no exceptions,’ though he acknowledged it might occasionally ‘lack common sense.’
However, the Grok 4 launch was not without controversy. Researchers discovered that the model, through its ‘chain-of-thought’ transparency feature, consults Elon Musk’s personal views on X when addressing sensitive topics, suggesting a deliberate alignment with its founder’s perspectives.

Founded in July 2023, xAI has rapidly positioned itself as a formidable competitor in the AI landscape. In March 2025, xAI acquired Musk’s social media platform X, a move that valued xAI at $80 billion and X at $33 billion at the time, bringing the combined entity to $113 billion. The company generates revenue by selling access to its Grok LLM series via an application programming interface (API) and consumer-focused subscriptions. Bloomberg reported that xAI anticipates generating $500 million in gross revenue this year, with projections soaring to over $13 billion in annual earnings by 2029, underscoring its ambitious trajectory in the generative AI market.
