TLDR: Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, has laid off at least 500 generalist AI tutors from its data annotation team, responsible for training the Grok chatbot. This move is part of a strategic shift to accelerate the expansion of specialist AI tutors, with plans to increase this team tenfold. Affected employees were notified via email and had their system access immediately terminated, though they will receive pay until November 30 or the end of their contracts. The restructuring also follows the recent resignation of xAI’s CFO, Mike Liberatore.
Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence startup, xAI, has initiated a significant strategic pivot, resulting in the layoff of at least 500 employees from its data annotation team. These individuals, primarily generalist AI tutors, were instrumental in training the company’s flagship Grok chatbot by categorizing and contextualizing raw data. The decision, communicated to employees via email late on Friday, September 12, 2025, marks a decisive shift towards prioritizing specialist AI tutors.
According to internal communications reviewed by various reports, xAI stated, ‘After a thorough review of our Human Data efforts, we’ve decided to accelerate the expansion and prioritization of our specialist AI tutors, while scaling back our focus on general AI tutor roles. This strategic pivot will take effect immediately.’ The company explicitly noted that ‘we no longer need most generalist AI tutor positions and your employment with xAI will conclude.’
Employees affected by the layoffs were informed that they would continue to receive pay through the end of their contracts or until November 30, 2025. However, their access to company systems was terminated immediately upon receiving the notification. This abrupt change has raised concerns about employee morale and the long-term stability within the young AI firm.
The restructuring comes as xAI announced ambitious plans to significantly bolster its team of specialist AI tutors, aiming for a tenfold increase. The company is actively recruiting experts across various domains, including STEM, finance, medicine, and safety, to help ‘build truth-seeking AGI.’ This move reflects a broader industry trend where AI companies are increasingly seeking domain-specific knowledge over generalist skills to enhance the performance and capabilities of their advanced models.

Adding to the turbulence within xAI, the company also recently experienced a leadership change. Mike Liberatore, who served as Chief Financial Officer, resigned quietly by late July after only a few months in the role. His departure, following his appointment from Airbnb in April, further underscores the dynamic and often volatile environment within Musk’s ventures as xAI strives to compete with established players like OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic.
