The AI agent is designed to understand and respond to natural language requests, making settings management more intuitive and accessible.
At the core of this new capability is Microsoft’s compact AI model, ‘Mu.’ This specialized model boasts 330 million parameters and has been rigorously trained on 3.6 million examples, enabling it to process user requests and provide responses in under 500 milliseconds. A key aspect of Mu’s design is its optimization for Neural Processing Units (NPUs), ensuring that all processing occurs directly on the user’s device. This on-device execution not only guarantees rapid performance but also enhances user privacy, as no data is transmitted to the cloud.
Users can interact with the AI agent by typing natural language queries directly into the Settings app’s search bar. For instance, a user could type ‘how to control my PC by voice’ or ‘my mouse pointer is too small,’ and the agent will either present the correct steps to resolve the issue or, with user permission, automate and complete the task directly. This functionality extends to various settings, such as enabling dark mode or disabling notifications for specific applications like Microsoft Teams.
The rollout of this AI agent is commencing with Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs, provided the primary display language is set to English. Microsoft has confirmed that support for eligible AMD and Intel-powered PCs will follow soon. The feature is currently being tested with Windows Insiders in both the Release Preview Channel (Build 26100.4762) and the Dev Channel, indicating a phased deployment strategy.
