West Tennessee Healthcare Implements AI-Driven Solution to Shorten Patient Hospital Stays

TLDR: West Tennessee Healthcare is piloting Dragonfly Navigate, an AI workflow technology developed by Xsolis, at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. This initiative aims to assist case managers in reducing the length of patient hospital stays by leveraging real-time data to predict discharge readiness and optimize post-hospital placement. The system has previously seen significant savings through its partnership with Xsolis’ AI solutions.

Jackson, Tennessee-based West Tennessee Healthcare has launched a pilot program at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital, introducing an advanced AI workflow technology known as Dragonfly Navigate, developed by Xsolis. This innovative solution is designed to empower case managers in their efforts to significantly reduce the duration of patient hospital stays.

Dragonfly Navigate functions by analyzing real-time patient data to accurately predict discharge readiness and determine the most appropriate post-hospital placement, whether it be home, a skilled nursing facility, or long-term care. This proactive approach is expected to streamline the discharge process and enhance overall patient flow within the hospital system.

Debbie Ashworth, Executive Director of Care Management for West Tennessee Healthcare, emphasized that the new workflow is intended to complement existing clinical expertise, facilitating more proactive discharge planning. This, in turn, allows care teams more time to focus on direct patient needs.

According to Joan Butters, CEO of Xsolis, delays in patient discharge represent a substantial financial burden for hospitals, costing approximately $3,000 per patient per day. Butters highlighted the potential impact, noting that if just 20% of 10,000 patients experience an extra day’s stay, the cumulative cost to hospitals could run into millions of dollars, simultaneously reducing capacity for new admissions.

Xsolis ensures the robustness and reliability of its AI models through quarterly retraining and annual data and security audits. The overarching goal of this technology is to minimize administrative back-and-forth with payers and mitigate patient risks such as infections and readmissions that can arise from unnecessary extended hospitalizations.

West Tennessee Healthcare’s collaboration with Xsolis is not new; the health system has been utilizing other Xsolis products since July 2022. This ongoing partnership has already yielded significant financial benefits, with West Tennessee Healthcare reporting $5.1 million in savings due to decreased avoidable denials through the use of Xsolis’ AI solutions. The adoption of Dragonfly Navigate represents an expansion of this successful engagement, further integrating AI to improve patient throughput and streamline medical necessity case reviews.
