Wellstar Health System Implements vflok’s AI-Powered Swift™ Scheduling Copilot to Empower Nursing Teams

TLDR: Wellstar Health System, in partnership with Catalyst by Wellstar and High Alpha Innovation, has launched vflok’s Swift™ AI Scheduling Copilot. This innovative workforce solution aims to revolutionize nurse scheduling by leveraging advanced machine learning and generative AI, empowering nurses with greater control and flexibility over their schedules, and ultimately improving retention rates and reducing administrative burdens.

Wellstar Health System, a prominent healthcare provider, has announced the rollout of the Swift™ AI Scheduling Copilot, a groundbreaking workforce solution developed by vflok Inc. This initiative, a collaboration with Catalyst by Wellstar and venture builder High Alpha Innovation, is designed to address critical challenges in nurse retention and satisfaction by transforming the traditional scheduling process. The announcement, initially made in April 2024, highlights Wellstar’s commitment to leveraging advanced technology to support its nursing staff.

The core of vflok’s solution lies in its use of advanced machine learning models and generative AI, which are embedded directly into the scheduling workflow. This technology empowers nurses to form connected communities, enabling them to collaboratively shape their schedules, arrange in-system coverage for unexpected events, and eliminate the historical lack of transparency in schedule development. The ultimate goal is to create work schedules that seamlessly integrate into a nurse’s life, rather than forcing nurses to adapt their lives to rigid work demands.

Nurse retention has become a significant concern in the U.S. healthcare system. Reports indicate that 23% of nurses are likely to quit in 2024, with turnover costs averaging $56,300 per nurse, leading to hospitals losing millions annually. A primary driver for these resignations is dissatisfaction with scheduling, including limited flexibility and a lack of personal input. vflok directly tackles these issues by providing a human-centered approach to scheduling.

Elliott Parker, CEO of High Alpha Innovation, emphasized the impact, stating, “Nurse leaders want all nurses to feel valued and heard. Nurse managers have had the impossible task of factoring complex floor dynamics, individual preferences, and last-minute changes to create fair and balanced schedules.” He added that vflok will enable nurses to ‘care for nurses’ by simplifying coverage arrangements and freeing nurse managers to focus more on patient care and team support rather than administrative tasks.

Wellstar plans to pilot vflok in Q3 2024 to measure its impact before a system-wide rollout and potential introduction to other health systems. Vflok is led by CEO John P. Sheehan, an experienced HealthTech entrepreneur, and Chief Technology & Product Officer David Sommers, who brings deep expertise in machine learning and AI development. This strategic deployment underscores Wellstar’s dedication to innovation and improving the daily work experience for its nursing professionals, aiming for higher retention and reduced temporary staffing costs.
