TLDR: Over 200 entrepreneurs across the Visayas region have successfully integrated Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other digital tools into their operations, thanks to comprehensive upskilling programs led by PLDT Enterprise and Smart Communications, in partnership with government agencies like the DTI. These initiatives aim to empower Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) with the necessary digital literacy, e-commerce skills, and AI proficiency to thrive in the modern economy.
More than 200 entrepreneurs in the Visayas region are transforming their businesses by embracing Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other digital technologies. This significant shift is largely attributed to the ‘Tech Connect: MSME Power Up’ and ‘Shop and Ship Caravan’ programs, spearheaded by PLDT Enterprise and Smart Communications, Inc., in collaboration with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and other key partners.
These initiatives are designed to equip Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) with crucial digital tools and knowledge, enabling them to compete effectively in today’s rapidly evolving economic landscape. The programs have reached various parts of the Visayas, including Eastern Visayas (Ormoc City, Sogod, and Maasin City) and Cebu province.
One notable success story is Dino Mirafuentes, a 28-year-old farmer-entrepreneur from Ormoc City, Leyte. Mirafuentes, who runs an integrated organic farm, now confidently uses generative AI to refine his social media content and design professional product labels. He shared, “I was conscious about spelling errors and grammar when making posts. So why not use the resources that are available that can help my business? With AI tools, I’m more confident in my output.” His experience highlights how AI can streamline operations and boost confidence for small business owners.
Jinky Francisco, PLDT Enterprise SMBiz Visayas and Mindanao Head, emphasized the commitment behind these efforts. “These initiatives represent our commitment to ensuring that every Filipino entrepreneur has access to the digital tools and knowledge they need to compete in today’s economy. Our partnerships with DTI and other agencies have allowed us to reach over 200 small businesses across the Visayas, but more importantly, we’re creating a multiplier effect where trained entrepreneurs become advocates in their own communities,” she stated.
The ‘Tech Connect: MSME Power Up’ series, a three-leg digital upskilling program, focused on teaching MSMEs how AI can optimize various aspects of their businesses, from social media marketing to content creation. For entrepreneurs like Mirafuentes, the training validated their intuitive adoption of digital tools and provided a clearer understanding of responsible AI usage. He noted, “Before the training, I was too conscious when I made posts using generative AI tools. With this training, I was enlightened that it’s okay to use AI as long as it is used correctly.”
In Cebu, the ‘Shop and Ship Caravan,’ a collaboration with TikTok Shop Philippines, J&T Express, and DTI Cebu Province, saw over 90 small businesses participate. This program concentrated on enhancing digital literacy and online selling skills, providing practical knowledge for navigating online marketplaces. Milody Dimansillo-Alcuitas, owner of Mil Dim Handcrafted Creations in Carcar City, expressed her appreciation: “It’s so important to keep up with digitalization today, and as a business owner, I really appreciate this kind of activity.”

The comprehensive approach of these programs extends beyond AI literacy, incorporating cybersecurity awareness, e-commerce skills, and digital payment systems. This holistic strategy addresses the multifaceted challenges faced by small businesses, fostering sustainable livelihood opportunities and enabling greater participation in the digital economy. As participants gain confidence, they are expected to become advocates and educators within their communities, further amplifying the impact of these digital transformation efforts.
