Visa Unveils New Tools to Empower AI Agents in the Evolving Landscape of Agentic Commerce

TLDR: Visa has significantly advanced its Intelligent Commerce platform by launching a Model Context Protocol (MCP) Server and a Visa Acceptance Agent Toolkit. These innovations are designed to seamlessly integrate AI agents and large language models (LLMs) directly into Visa’s payment network, ushering in an era of ‘agentic commerce’ where AI can autonomously shop and make purchases for consumers. This move positions Visa alongside other major players like Mastercard and PayPal, who are also developing similar AI-driven commerce solutions, emphasizing security, consumer control, and streamlined transactions.

Visa is at the forefront of a transformative shift in digital commerce, announcing substantial enhancements to its Intelligent Commerce platform with the introduction of a Model Context Protocol (MCP) Server and a comprehensive Visa Acceptance Agent Toolkit. These new offerings are poised to revolutionize how artificial intelligence (AI) agents interact with payment systems, enabling a new paradigm known as ‘agentic commerce’.

The core objective of these tools is to empower developers and businesses to connect AI agents directly to Visa’s extensive network. This integration facilitates a future where AI agents can autonomously browse, select, and purchase goods and services on behalf of consumers, based on pre-defined preferences and limits.

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) Server serves as a critical, secure integration layer. It standardizes the communication between AI agents, including large language models (LLMs), and Visa’s Intelligent Commerce APIs. This standardization is crucial for ensuring secure and efficient interactions within the payment ecosystem. Complementing this, the Visa Acceptance Agent Toolkit provides developers with prebuilt workflows, significantly reducing development time for common agent-driven tasks such as invoicing and ‘Pay by Link’ functionalities. This streamlining is expected to accelerate the adoption of agentic commerce solutions.

Rubail Birwadker, Visa Senior Vice President and Global Head of Growth, highlighted the profound nature of this evolution, stating, ‘There’s almost a reimagining of the internet going on right now.’ He noted that while the past three decades of eCommerce focused on fending off malicious bots, the current challenge is inverted: enabling trusted AI bots that represent legitimate consumers. This sentiment is echoed across the industry, with companies like Mastercard (through its Agent Pay program) and PayPal (with its own remote MCP server and Agent Toolkit, including an Order Intents API) also making significant strides in this ‘agentic era’ of commerce.

Security remains a paramount concern. Visa’s approach incorporates tokenized cards and secure passkeys, which encrypt sensitive cardholder information and verify that an AI agent is authorized to make purchases. Consumers will maintain robust control over their transactions, with the ability to set specific spending limits, define purchase conditions, and approve transactions before they are finalized. This emphasis on digital trust, strong authentication, and auditability is critical for fostering consumer confidence in AI-driven purchasing.

Visa is not pursuing this transformation in isolation. The company has forged strategic partnerships with leading AI innovators, including Anthropic, IBM, Microsoft, Mistral AI, OpenAI, Perplexity, Samsung, and Stripe. These collaborations underscore a collective effort to build the foundational AI agents that will redefine commerce. The market is already showing significant momentum, with a reported surge of over 1,200% in web traffic from generative AI sources between July 2024 and February 2025, indicating a strong demand for highly personalized and AI-driven shopping experiences.
