TLDR: Global payments leader Visa has unveiled a suite of AI-driven innovations under its ‘Visa Intelligent Commerce’ initiative, aiming to enhance security, seamlessness, and intelligence in digital transactions across the Philippines and Asia-Pacific. This move leverages Visa’s over $3 billion global investment in AI and data infrastructure, introducing solutions like Visa Pay, Digital Identity, and expanded Flex Credential capabilities to support the nation’s rapidly growing digital economy.
MANILA, Philippines – Visa, a global leader in digital payments, is significantly advancing its commitment to the Philippines’ burgeoning digital economy with the introduction of a comprehensive suite of artificial intelligence (AI)-powered tools. These innovations, launched under the new ‘Visa Intelligent Commerce’ initiative, are designed to transform everyday transactions, making them more secure, seamless, and intelligent for both consumers and businesses across the Philippines and the broader Asia-Pacific region.
Jeffrey Navarro, Country Manager for Visa Philippines, emphasized the strategic importance of the local market, stating, ‘The continuously growing digital payment sector in the Philippines makes it a prime environment for technological innovation – one that harnesses AI for the benefit of the digital Filipino business owner and consumer.’ This sentiment underscores Visa’s long-term vision, supported by a global investment exceeding $3 billion over the past decade in AI and data infrastructure, aimed at empowering banks, fintechs, merchants, and developers to build secure digital commerce experiences on its extensive network.
The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) reported a significant milestone in 2023, with 50% of retail payments in the country being digitized, highlighting the nation’s readiness for further technological integration in its payment ecosystem.
Among the key innovations being rolled out is Visa Pay, a service poised to connect participating digital wallets, such as Maya in the Philippines, to any Visa-accepting merchant globally, facilitating in-store, online, and scan-to-pay transactions. Maya is identified as a crucial local partner for its imminent launch.
Visa is also introducing its Digital Identity suite, which includes solutions like passkeys and ‘tap to confirm.’ These are engineered to reduce payment friction and enhance security through advanced user authentication and enriched transaction data, thereby mitigating fraud.
For micro-entrepreneurs and informal sellers, Visa is expanding the reach of its Visa Accept solution. This innovation enables them to receive contactless payments directly to their eligible Visa debit cards using any NFC-enabled smartphone. While initially launching in Vietnam, the service is expected to significantly benefit freelancers and small service providers across Southeast Asia.
On the consumer front, Visa’s Flex Credential continues to gain momentum. Following its successful rollout in Japan with partners like SMBC and Sumitomo Mitsui Card Co., this next-generation card allows users to seamlessly switch between debit, credit, and rewards. The offering is now being expanded to support small businesses, providing flexibility to toggle between business and personal accounts, with upcoming launches in Vietnam.
Furthermore, Visa is deepening its engagement in digital currencies. The company is facilitating stablecoin-backed card payments and settlements, and has launched the Visa Tokenized Asset Platform (VTAP). This platform is designed to support programmable money, cross-border payments, and tokenized asset trading, with plans for wider availability in late 2025 and into 2026.
Poojyata Khattar, Head of Product for Regional Southeast Asia at Visa, highlighted the transformative potential of AI: ‘Imagine the possibilities that AI brings to everyday life for Filipino digital consumers—from automatically ordering your favorite meals on Grab before you even think of it, to alerting you about the next big K-pop concert and arranging all your travel plans.’ She added that with Visa’s trusted payment infrastructure and advanced AI capabilities, such seamless, secure, and enjoyable experiences are now within reach for everyone.
Visa’s global network has processed an astounding 3.3 trillion transactions over the past 25 years. Looking ahead, the company is preparing for an era of ‘agentic commerce,’ where AI agents will browse, purchase, and manage transactions on behalf of users. Visa anticipates that AI agents will soon be able to transact using its 4.8 billion credentials at millions of merchant locations worldwide.
