Vietnam Emerges as a Leading Force in ASEAN Generative AI Landscape with Surging Startup Activity

TLDR: Vietnam has solidified its position as the second-largest market for generative AI (GenAI) startups in ASEAN, holding a 27% market share. This growth is fueled by initiatives like the “GenAI Open Innovation Vietnam 2025” program, which fostered numerous startup-enterprise collaborations. Additionally, individual startups like Filum AI are attracting significant investment to develop advanced AI solutions, further driving AI adoption across diverse sectors including manufacturing, finance, and e-commerce.

Vietnam is rapidly establishing itself as a significant player in the global artificial intelligence arena, particularly within the generative AI (GenAI) sector. According to the ASEAN GenAI Startup Report 2024 by GenAI Fund, Vietnam now commands 27% of the ASEAN market share for GenAI startups, placing it second only to Singapore, which holds 44%.

This burgeoning ecosystem is being propelled by strategic initiatives and substantial investment. A key event highlighting this momentum was the “GenAI Open Innovation Vietnam 2025,” held in Ho Chi Minh City in July. The program, supported by Amazon Web Services (AWS) and implemented by Renova Cloud, attracted over 400 registrations and nearly 300 in-person attendees. It successfully facilitated 88 startup–enterprise matches, with an impressive 43.8% progressing to Proof of Concept (PoC) discussions.

Laura Nguyen, CEO of GenAI Fund, emphasized the program’s mission to leverage the transformative power of GenAI to deliver tangible value to businesses. She noted that Vietnam is currently in a “breakthrough phase of innovation,” and the initiative provides a crucial platform for startups to scale strategically while assisting enterprises in confidently adopting GenAI solutions. The program, initially launched in Vietnam in 2024 and expanded to Singapore in April 2025, connects enterprise challenges with tailored startup solutions. The latest edition brought together 233 GenAI startups from Vietnam and the broader region with 11 leading companies across finance, manufacturing, healthcare, and consumer services, including prominent names like HDBank, MBBank, Coca-Cola Beverages Vietnam, KFC Vietnam, VNG Games, and VNDirect.

The event also underscored Vietnam’s increasing readiness for GenAI adoption, with companies dedicating specific budgets for AI, fast-tracking pilot approvals, and providing “sandbox” environments for real-data testing. AWS plays a vital role as a leading cloud provider, with its ecosystem startups benefiting from PoC funding and streamlined deployment processes. Out of the 88 matches, 31 PoC projects have already been launched, granting startups direct customer access and enabling enterprises to accelerate innovation. The program is set to expand its regional impact by extending to Malaysia, Indonesia, and Japan.

Further exemplifying this vibrant startup scene, Filum AI, a Vietnamese startup founded in 2020, recently secured $1 million in funding from investors including Nextrans, VinVentures, TheVentures funds, and strategic investors Tran Viet Hung (Founder Got It) and Tran Anh Dung (Founder MOG). Filum AI specializes in a customer experience management platform powered by artificial intelligence. According to Mr. Tran Van Vien, CEO of Filum AI, the new capital will be instrumental in expanding the startup’s research and development activities, accelerating product development, and facilitating its entry into the Southeast Asian market.

Mr. Vien stated that in 2025, Filum AI plans to concentrate on developing “AI Agents (AI personnel)” to assist businesses in optimizing operations, personalizing customer experiences, and reducing costs. This aligns with global trends, as DxReport 2024 indicates that customer experience is a top priority for 38% of global businesses, with 86% of customers willing to pay more for a superior experience.

The adoption of artificial intelligence is growing robustly across Vietnamese enterprises, particularly in manufacturing, finance, e-commerce, and customer service. In manufacturing, AI is used for monitoring production lines, analyzing data to minimize defects, and improving equipment performance. It also aids in demand forecasting, warehouse management, and automating transportation to cut logistics costs. The banking and finance industry leverages AI for fraud detection, credit scoring, and personalizing financial products, with many Vietnamese banks deploying AI chatbots for 24/7 customer support. E-commerce and marketing platforms utilize AI to analyze consumer behavior and provide personalized product recommendations.
