The core mission behind AVA is to bridge the significant digital divide that prevents a large portion of the world’s population from accessing modern technology. Many individuals in these communities do not own smartphones, lack consistent internet access, or face literacy barriers, making traditional AI tools inaccessible . AVA addresses these challenges directly by operating on basic feature phones, eliminating the need for smartphones or internet connectivity . Furthermore, it overcomes literacy hurdles by delivering answers in local languages through voice, converting voice to text and back to voice in real-time .
The AI assistant is designed to be reliable and context-aware, adapting its responses to user needs . It blends the capabilities of advanced AI models like ChatGPT, Alexa, and Siri with targeted health, education, agriculture, and other expertise from Viamo’s partners, including UNICEF and Unilever . For instance, in Zambia, AVA can provide localized information such as lists of family planning clinics and approved agricultural advice .
The launch of AVA has been met with enthusiasm. Dr. Nii Lante Heward-Mills, Country Director for Viamo in Ghana and Liberia, emphasized the transformative potential, stating, “Combining AI and mobile will bring the next billion people online and reduce the digital divide markedly.” Charles Abani, the Resident Coordinator for the UN in Ghana, lauded the service, urging greater collaboration among innovators, the private sector, and the public sector to scale ICT tools for the most marginalized .

Currently, AVA is under pilot in Zambia and Nigeria, and is already available in Ghana . Viamo plans a rapid rollout to Pakistan, India, and Tanzania next, with the ultimate goal of deploying this offline generative AI in all 25 of Viamo’s markets and country offices . A specific application of this technology was seen in Pakistan with the launch of ‘Noor’, Pakistan’s first-ever voice-first Offline Generative AI Voice Companion for disaster preparedness and response, further demonstrating the versatility and critical utility of Viamo’s innovation .
