Vanderbilt University Unveils Enterprise AI and Computing Innovation Studio

TLDR: Vanderbilt University’s Amplify Generative AI Innovation Center and Data Science Institute have jointly launched the Enterprise AI and Computing Innovation Studio. This new initiative aims to foster AI-related research by engaging undergraduate and graduate students, along with staff, in developing project-based solutions using advanced artificial intelligence tools.

In a significant move to advance artificial intelligence research and application, Vanderbilt University has announced the establishment of the Enterprise AI and Computing Innovation Studio. This collaborative effort, spearheaded by the Amplify Generative AI Innovation Center and the Data Science Institute (DSI), was officially launched in early September 2025.

The studio is designed to be a dynamic hub where undergraduates, graduate students, and university staff can converge to tackle real-world problems through the development of AI-powered solutions. It provides a unique platform for students to gain invaluable hands-on professional experience and collaborate with peers across various disciplines, as well as with faculty experts in the field of AI.

Jesse Spencer-Smith, interim director and chief data scientist of the Data Science Institute, highlighted the transformative potential of the new studio. “With the advent of AI and AI-assisted coding and agents, we had an opportunity to really revolutionize the way that we solve problems within the university,” Spencer-Smith stated. He further elaborated, “This is a program that provides additional background [and] additional training to students to allow them to participate in real-world solving of problems using the most cutting-edge AI tools.”

The program structure includes an initial training phase, after which students will be paired with more experienced individuals, such as staff data scientists or Generative AI engineers. Spencer-Smith explained, “We’re going to start having a pool of students that have completed training so [that] they know about agents, they understand the basic workings of AI [and] they know the Amplify framework. [They will be] actually skilled in these areas enough so they can be partnered with someone who’s more skilled… to actually participate in the creation of these.”

Anikait Rawat, a first-year computer science and economics double-major, expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative. “When I first heard Vanderbilt was launching the AI Studio, I honestly felt inspired and motivated because it showed me that the university is really investing in giving students hands-on access to cutting-edge technology and a chance to be part of shaping how AI develops,” Rawat shared in an email to The Hustler.
