USAA Leadership Emphasizes Continuous Learning for Generative AI Future

TLDR: USAA’s CIO, Amala Duggirala, and Chief Data and Analytics Officer, Ramnik Bajaj, highlight that continuous learning and an ‘experiment and see’ approach are crucial for leveraging generative AI. The company is actively training its 38,000 employees, deploying over 200 AI tools, and integrating AI into various operations to enhance productivity and prepare the workforce for an AI-driven future.

In a forward-looking stance on the integration of generative artificial intelligence (AI), USAA’s leadership is championing a culture of continuous learning and strategic experimentation. Amala Duggirala, USAA’s Chief Information Officer, has underscored that ‘relentless learners will create the future’ in the era of generative AI, emphasizing the critical need for ongoing skill development among employees. This perspective aligns with the company’s broader strategy to adapt and thrive amidst technological advancements.

USAA, a financial services giant, is not merely observing the AI revolution but actively participating in it. The company has committed to training and reskilling its workforce to prepare for the evolving job landscape. This includes rolling out an ‘AI Aware’ course for all 38,000 employees, demonstrating a comprehensive effort to ensure that every team member understands and can effectively interact with AI technologies. Duggirala is particularly focused on supporting IT employees in acquiring the necessary skills to collaborate with generative AI, fostering critical thinking and a product-oriented mindset to enhance their partnership with business units .

Ramnik Bajaj, USAA’s Chief Data and Analytics Officer, who also oversees the company’s AI initiatives, revealed that USAA already boasts hundreds of deployed AI solutions. The advent of generative AI has further intensified interest in the technology across the organization. USAA’s senior executives have participated in immersive AI training sessions, reflecting a top-down commitment to understanding and implementing these tools .

USAA’s approach to AI is characterized by an ‘experiment and see’ philosophy. For the past five years, the company has been hands-on in experimenting with and deploying various AI technologies, including both traditional machine learning and generative AI. Bajaj noted that USAA has deployed over 200 AI tools and products, utilizing them both internally and externally. Internally, tools like ‘EagleGPT’ serve as an assistant for the workforce, while ‘code assist’ aids software developers in their coding tasks .

Bajaj elaborated on their strategy, stating, ‘We experiment and decide.’ He highlighted that in 2023, USAA conducted numerous pilots with generative AI, learning valuable lessons that informed their implementation of about a dozen generative AI solutions into their environment in 2024. While moving ‘quickly, but cautiously,’ USAA, as a conservative company, prioritizes managing risks associated with generative AI solutions before widespread deployment .
