TLDR: The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) has partnered with Scale AI to develop ‘Thunderforge,’ a new AI platform designed to integrate artificial intelligence agents into military wargames and operations. This initiative aims to enhance battlefield decision-making, accelerate response times, and modernize American defense capabilities, with initial deployment planned for the Indo-Pacific and European Commands.
The United States Department of Defense (DoD) is making a significant leap in military planning and operations with the introduction of ‘Thunderforge,’ a cutting-edge artificial intelligence platform. Led by Scale AI, in collaboration with industry giants Microsoft, Google, and defense contractor Anduril Industries, Thunderforge is poised to revolutionize how the U.S. military approaches wargaming and strategic decision-making.
Awarded a prime contract by the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), Thunderforge is designated as the DoD’s flagship program for leveraging AI in military planning. Its core objective is to integrate AI agents into various military workflows, providing advanced decision-making support systems for commanders and enhancing the ability to simulate confrontations with foreign adversaries. This marks the DoD’s initial venture into incorporating AI agents directly into military processes.
Alexandr Wang, Founder and CEO of Scale AI, emphasized the transformative potential of the program, stating, ‘Scale AI is honored to lead Thunderforge. Our AI solutions will transform today’s military operating process and modernize American defense.’ He further highlighted the strategic advantage, noting that ‘DIU’s enhanced speed will provide our nation’s military leaders with the greatest technological advantage.’
The program is designed to address a critical need identified by Bryce Goodman, program lead and contractor for the DIU Thunderforge program, who pointed to a ‘fundamental mismatch between the speed of modern warfare and our ability to respond.’ Thunderforge aims to bridge this gap by enabling AI-powered, data-driven warfare, ensuring U.S. forces can ‘anticipate and respond to threats with speed and precision,’ according to the Defense Innovation Unit.
Scale AI, known for providing training data for leading AI entities, will work with partners to develop and deploy AI-powered solutions and custom ‘agentic workflows.’ Anduril will integrate Scale AI’s Large Language Model (LLM) capabilities into its Lattice simulation infrastructure for enhanced mission planning, while Microsoft will contribute state-of-the-art LLM technology for an advanced multimodal solution. Crucially, all AI-powered solutions and workflows will operate under careful human oversight.

Initial deployment of Thunderforge is slated for the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM) and the U.S. European Command (EUCOM). This initiative is seen as a significant milestone in military advancement, with Scale AI stating that ‘The deployment of artificial intelligence will enable the nation to advance through a combination of technology and critical human thinking.’
