US Households Show Growing Adoption of Paid AI Applications, Strong Interest in Smart Home AI Services

TLDR: A recent study by Parks Associates reveals that 15% of US internet households currently utilize a paid AI application. Notably, 75% of these generative AI app users express a willingness to pay for smart home AI services, indicating a significant market opportunity for AI-powered solutions in the smart home sector. The research highlights accelerating AI familiarity and its impact on consumer evaluation of smart technology.

DALLAS, August 14, 2025 – New research from Parks Associates indicates a notable trend in the adoption of artificial intelligence within American households. The firm’s latest consumer survey, encompassing 8,000 US internet households, found that 15% are currently using a paid AI application. This figure underscores a growing engagement with AI technologies among the general populace.

Further insights from the study, titled ‘AI in the Smart Home: Applications and Consumer Perceptions,’ reveal a strong potential for AI integration into smart home services. A significant 75% of consumers who currently pay for generative AI applications expressed a willingness to also pay for a smart home AI service. This suggests a clear demand and perceived value for AI capabilities that enhance home automation and security.

Elizabeth Parks, President and CMO of Parks Associates, commented on these findings, stating, ‘Consumers are telling us they value devices that understand context and can take actions on their behalf. AI familiarity is accelerating and reshaping how consumers evaluate smart tech.’ She emphasized the strategic importance for service providers to collaborate with smart home and security brands to engage these early adopters, who are crucial for influencing broader market adoption. ‘These early adopters are critical audiences to win and then convert to influencers for more mass-market customers down the line,’ Parks added.

The study also highlighted that households already equipped with smart home or security solutions exhibit considerably higher rates of generative AI usage and familiarity compared to the average US household. This demographic represents a prime target for new AI-enabled offerings. Interestingly, while advertising a product as ‘AI-powered’ might deter some consumers in other sectors, the research suggests that smart home and security products could be an exception, where AI marketing has a net-positive effect on purchase intentions. Specifically, 81% of security system owners find at least one safety-related AI-powered benefit to be valuable.
