Upwork Unveils Advanced AI Work Agent ‘Uma’ to Revolutionize Hiring and Collaboration

TLDR: Upwork has announced significant advancements to its Uma AI, transforming it into an AI Work Agent capable of streamlining hiring, collaboration, and work management. This evolution, part of Upwork’s Summer 2025 release, introduces features like AI-powered instant interviews, intelligent video meeting summaries, and enhanced search, aiming to amplify human ingenuity and improve efficiency for businesses and freelancers.

PALO ALTO, Calif. – Upwork Inc. (Nasdaq: UPWK), a leading global marketplace for human and AI-powered work, has unveiled a comprehensive suite of over 75 new AI-driven products and features as part of its semi-annual ‘Upwork Updates’ Summer 2025 release. The cornerstone of this release is the evolution of Uma, Upwork’s Mindful AI, from a work companion to a more capable, always-on AI Work Agent.

This strategic advancement is designed to amplify human ingenuity by combining skilled talent with cutting-edge AI, fostering smarter, faster, and easier ways to work. Companies are increasingly leveraging Upwork for AI solutions and on-demand, AI-literate expert talent, making these innovations particularly timely.

Uma is already demonstrating tangible results, powering a majority of new client job posts and contributing to an 8% increase in successful matches for high-value projects. It also plays a crucial role in helping freelancers discover more earning opportunities. In its new capacity, Uma takes proactive actions on behalf of both businesses and freelancers, aiming to eliminate tedious tasks and accelerate hiring, collaboration, and overall work outcomes.

A standout new capability is ‘Instant Interviews.’ Clients can now provide Uma with their preferred interview questions, and Uma will conduct these interviews during the proposal process. It then delivers structured summaries of each freelancer’s responses, highlighting their alignment with the role and client needs. This feature is expected to significantly reduce time spent on manual reviews and screening calls for businesses, while providing freelancers with a flexible way to showcase skills beyond traditional cover letters, such as communication, language fluency, problem-solving, and domain expertise.

Further enhancing productivity and clarity, Upwork has integrated AI-powered video meetings directly into its messaging platform. These meetings now provide AI-generated summaries, transcripts, recordings, and action items post-meeting. Additionally, ‘Uma-powered search,’ built on millions of platform interactions, offers context-aware suggestions based on a client’s active job posts and search history, facilitating faster discovery of relevant information and talent.

Dave Bottoms, general manager and SVP of product for the Upwork Marketplace, commented on the release, stating, “Work is being reshaped in real time as intelligent agents are becoming a more familiar and essential part of how work gets done. With Uma, we’re unlocking a new era where agentic AI amplifies human brilliance to drive the next wave of opportunity, efficiency, and impact.”
