TLDR: The University of the Philippines (UP) system is actively integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into its educational practices, emphasizing a balanced approach that fosters innovation while upholding strict principles of accountability and academic integrity. This includes developing responsible AI guidelines, launching advanced AI degree programs, and conducting studies on AI’s impact on student learning.
The University of the Philippines (UP) system is at the forefront of embracing Artificial Intelligence (AI) in its educational framework, a move underscored by its commitment to both technological advancement and ethical governance. This strategic integration aims to harness AI’s transformative potential across various academic facets, from personalized learning to advanced research, while ensuring robust accountability measures are in place.
According to UP President Angelo Jimenez’s remarks on May 13, 2025, the university recognizes AI as a driving force of innovation that is rapidly reshaping industries, including education. He highlighted that universities are not only key producers of AI technology but also significant consumers, making it imperative to ’embrace the potential of AI in all areas of activity’ to maintain relevance and enhance educational quality.
Central to UP’s approach are its ‘Principles for Responsible and Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence.’ These guidelines are designed to inform the creation of policies, programs, and protocols that strike a crucial balance between fostering innovation and ensuring necessary regulation. This framework addresses the duality of AI – its capacity to support learning while also presenting challenges to academic integrity.
In a study conducted by the University of the Philippines on the impact of AI use on student learning, including their confidence in mathematics, it was found that AI can significantly enhance student engagement and, consequently, boost confidence in the subject. The study revealed that a group utilizing AI achieved notably higher scores compared to a non-AI group, suggesting a positive impact of AI intervention on learning outcomes.
Beyond integration, UP is also a pioneer in AI education, offering the country’s first PhD program in AI through its MEngg-PhD Straight Program. This initiative aims to make advanced AI education more accessible by streamlining the path to a doctoral degree. Furthermore, UP Cebu plans to introduce a predominantly online PhD in AI in the next academic year, which will not require a master’s degree, thereby removing barriers for students from underserved and non-traditional backgrounds.
The broader UP system, including the UP Open University (UPOU), has been instrumental in developing comprehensive guidelines for AI use in teaching and learning. UPOU, a trailblazer in online education, released its official Guidelines for the Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Teaching and Learning in January 2024. These guidelines acknowledge AI’s role in content creation, adaptive learning, language support, assessment, and feedback, emphasizing its contribution to developing lifelong learning skills.
However, the university also maintains a firm stance on academic integrity. As early as January 2023, UP faculty denounced the submission of dishonest scholarly works generated by AI. While encouraging the use of AI tools to enhance and facilitate learning, they stressed that AI outputs should not be misrepresented as solely student-created scholarly work. The faculty advocated for open discussions on AI, educating students on its proper use, and evolving academic requirements to foster deeper critical thinking.
UP’s commitment extends to advancing AI literacy through innovative approaches, such as the Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) offered by UP Open University. These courses, running from May to July, are designed to integrate AI into education and enhance learning experiences for a global audience.
