University of Mary Washington Establishes New Center for AI and the Liberal Arts to Explore Ethical and Societal Dimensions

TLDR: The University of Mary Washington (UMW) has announced the launch of its new Center for AI and the Liberal Arts, set to open in Fall 2025. This interdisciplinary center aims to integrate artificial intelligence into a liberal arts framework, focusing on the ethical, cultural, educational, and workforce implications of AI. Led by Professor Anand Rao, the Center will offer coursework, research opportunities, and public engagement initiatives.

The University of Mary Washington (UMW) is set to open its innovative Center for AI and the Liberal Arts in Fall 2025, marking a significant step in addressing the profound impact of artificial intelligence on society. This new center is designed to be a hub for interdisciplinary research, teaching, and public engagement, specifically examining how generative AI intersects with ethics, culture, education, and the broader workforce.

The announcement of the Center’s launch was shared by Anand Rao, who will serve as its Director and is also a Professor of Communication and Digital Studies at UMW. The initiative aligns with UMW’s commitment as a public liberal arts university in Virginia to blend traditional academic disciplines with digital innovation.

According to the university, the Center’s core mission is to ‘integrate AI into UMW’s liberal arts framework, ensuring students not only develop technical skills but also critically examine the ethical, cultural, and societal dimensions of AI.’ This holistic approach seeks to prepare students not just for the classroom, but for an AI-driven future, emphasizing the importance of understanding AI’s implications for careers, education, and daily life.

Programming at the Center will be comprehensive, including a variety of interdisciplinary coursework. Notable offerings for Fall 2025 include a semester-long course titled ‘AI and Society,’ which will delve into how generative AI influences education, career development, and ethical decision-making. Additionally, an ‘Introduction to AI’ one-credit course was offered in Summer 2025, providing foundational knowledge on AI’s mechanics, integration into work, and critical awareness. Students will have opportunities for hands-on projects such as chatbot development and augmented debates.

Beyond coursework, the Center will foster student research opportunities, host public debates, and provide faculty training. Workshops, guest lectures, and community partnerships are also planned to support faculty research into AI’s impact across various disciplines. The Center will approach AI from an educational perspective, teaching ‘how AI works, why it matters, who it impacts and how it may be used responsibly,’ exploring it through lenses of philosophy, sciences, ethics, and humanities.

The establishment of the Center has been bolstered by a generous $100,000 gift over five years from the Gladises, which will help fund its programming and operations. As the Gladises stated, ‘We want liberal arts students to graduate with not only a strong foundation in critical thinking and creativity, but also the AI skills to apply those strengths in today’s high-tech workplace. Our hope is that this Center for AI and Liberal Arts will inspire curiosity, spark innovation, and ensure UMW graduates are ready to thrive, compete, and lead in whatever future they choose.’

Professor Rao emphasized the Center’s forward-looking vision: ‘We’re not just preparing students for the classroom — we’re preparing them for the world beyond it, and that means preparing them for an AI-driven future. It’s essential to understand what AI will mean for the workforce, education, and our daily lives. Our students won’t just learn about AI — they’ll help shape the conversation.’
