TLDR: The University of Bergen has officially launched the Norwegian Computational Behaviour & AI Lab, spearheaded by Professor Christoph Trattner. This new laboratory will concentrate its research efforts on the critical areas of food, media, and democratic applications of artificial intelligence, marking a significant step in Norway’s growing AI research landscape.
Bergen, Norway – September 3, 2025 – The University of Bergen (UiB) today announced the establishment of the Norwegian Computational Behaviour & AI Lab, a new research initiative set to explore the intricate intersections of computational methods, human behaviour, and artificial intelligence. The laboratory will be led by Professor Christoph Trattner, a prominent figure in the field, who shared the news of its launch via a LinkedIn post.
The new lab is poised to become a key player in advancing research across three vital domains: food, media, and democratic AI. This focus underscores a commitment to understanding and shaping how AI technologies influence societal structures and individual interactions in everyday life.
The launch of the Norwegian Computational Behaviour & AI Lab comes amidst a broader national push to bolster AI research and innovation in Norway. The University of Bergen itself is a central hub for artificial intelligence initiatives, coordinating and promoting various research, education, and innovation projects through its UiB AI platform.
Earlier this year, the Norwegian government and the Research Council of Norway announced a substantial investment in AI, allocating up to NOK 200 million over five years to six new national AI research centers. One of these significant centers, “Empowerment of Human Learning” (AI LEARN), is co-led by the University of Bergen and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), receiving a substantial grant of 200 million NOK. This center focuses on hybrid human-AI learning for education, work, and society, aligning with the broader goals of responsible and socially beneficial AI development.
