RALEIGH, NC – The University of North Carolina (UNC) System has announced a significant strategic move, initiating the search for its inaugural Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer (CAIO). This high-level executive position is designed to provide comprehensive strategic vision, executive leadership, and operational oversight for the integration of Artificial Intelligence across the entire 17-campus system.

According to reports from ETIH EdTech News and detailed job descriptions, the CAIO will be tasked with identifying, planning, and implementing system-wide AI initiatives. The primary objectives of this role are multifaceted: to enhance administrative efficiency, reduce operational costs, improve educational outcomes for nearly 250,000 students enrolled across 16 universities and the NC School of Science and Mathematics, and to bolster the overall institutional missions of the UNC System.

The CAIO will report directly to the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and is expected to work collaboratively with key leadership, including the Deputy COO for Technology and Data, the Senior Vice President for Strategy and Policy, and the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. A crucial aspect of the role involves serving as the primary convenor for campus-level AI leads, data officers, and academic innovators, fostering a cohesive and coordinated approach to AI adoption.

This position demands strong coordination and diplomatic skills to ensure coherent strategies, shared best practices, and scalable implementations across the diverse institutional contexts within the UNC System. The role is structured as a hybrid work arrangement, requiring the CAIO to be onsite at least three days per week at the Dillon Building in downtown Raleigh. Candidates are generally expected to reside in North Carolina, within a two-hour commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

Minimum qualifications for the role include a Bachelor’s degree in computer science, data science, business administration, public administration, or a related field, coupled with at least seven years of progressively responsible experience in digital innovation or enterprise systems strategy, including leadership experience. Demonstrated success in leading transformation initiatives at a system or enterprise level is also a key requirement.
