UK AI Sector Achieves Record £2.9 Billion Investment Amidst Government Push for Growth and Trust

TLDR: British Artificial Intelligence companies have attracted a record £2.9 billion in private investment, with average deals reaching £5.9 million. This surge in funding has propelled the UK’s AI sector to contribute £11.8 billion to the national economy and employ over 86,000 people. The government is actively promoting further growth and public trust through initiatives like an AI assurance roadmap and efforts to streamline regulations.

The United Kingdom’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) sector has reached an unprecedented milestone, securing a record £2.9 billion in private investment. This substantial financial backing, with average deals valued at £5.9 million, underscores a booming industry that is now a significant contributor to the national economy. According to the government’s latest Artificial Intelligence Sector Study 2024, the UK’s AI companies collectively contribute £11.8 billion to the economy, a figure that has doubled since 2023. Furthermore, the sector now employs over 86,000 individuals across the country.

This remarkable growth has outpaced the wider economy by 150 times since 2022, driven by a rapidly expanding community of over 5,800 AI companies, marking a 58 percent increase since 2023 alone.

Technology Secretary Peter Kyle, speaking at Mansion House, emphasized the government’s commitment to fostering this growth. He urged industry leaders, investors, and regulators to collaborate in cutting red tape, expanding data centers, and attracting global talent to maintain the UK’s position as a world leader in AI innovation.

A key aspect of the government’s strategy is building public trust in AI technology. A new AI assurance roadmap has been launched, aiming to add billions to the economy and create new jobs. This initiative involves establishing a dedicated AI assurance profession, where independent experts will review and certify AI systems for safety, ethics, and accountability. A consortium of professional bodies is tasked with developing a code of ethics to guide these standards.

In addition to regulatory frameworks, the government is investing £2.7 million to enhance the capacity of regulators in AI. This funding will enable them to streamline the regulatory environment, accelerating the commercialization of transformative technologies across critical sectors such as energy (Ofgem), aviation (Civil Aviation Authority), and nuclear waste (Office for Nuclear Regulation).

The investment surge is not confined to traditional tech hubs. Figures indicate that the number of AI companies in regions like the Midlands, Yorkshire, Wales, and the North West has doubled in just three years, demonstrating a broader regional spread of innovation and economic benefit.

Sharron Gunn, Chief Executive of BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, lauded the government’s commitment, stating, “The government’s commitment to the creation of an AI assurance profession, whose practitioners are proud to be accountable to a code of ethics, is a huge step forward.” She also highlighted the importance of a consortium, including professional bodies, in developing this Code and recommending paths for registrations and certifications for AI assurance.
