Udemy Report Highlights Dual Focus: Accelerating AI Proficiency While Prioritizing Human Skills for Workforce Evolution

TLDR: A new report from Udemy reveals that enterprises are rapidly enhancing AI fluency among their workforce, with massive growth in AI-related learning. Concurrently, there’s a significant emphasis on developing essential human skills like critical thinking, leadership, and adaptability, underscoring a strategic balance between technological advancement and human capabilities for future workforce transformation.

Udemy, a leading AI-powered skills acceleration platform, has released its annual 2026 Global Learning & Skills Trends Report, indicating a dual imperative for enterprises: rapidly accelerating AI fluency while simultaneously bolstering crucial human skills to navigate ongoing workforce transformation. The report, compiled from learning data across over 17,000 Udemy enterprise customers, highlights key themes and in-demand skills shaping the future of work.

The findings reveal an explosive demand for AI-related skills. Udemy has observed 11 million generative AI course enrollments to date. Specifically, content consumption for GitHub Copilot skyrocketed by an astonishing 13,534% year-over-year for technical applications, while Microsoft Copilot content saw a 3,400% year-over-year surge across business use cases. In India, the growth is particularly pronounced, with a 1,526% increase in Prompt Engineering skills and an 89% surge in upskilling related to Vector Databases among Udemy learners, signaling a clear embrace of generative AI technologies and the need for scalable data infrastructure. Microsoft data further supports this trend, showing that 59% of organizations in India are already leveraging AI agents to automate workflows.

However, the report emphasizes that technical AI proficiency alone is insufficient. Enterprises are also heavily investing in adaptive skills, often referred to as soft skills or power skills. Learning in this category grew 25% year-over-year on Udemy Business, with critical thinking skills increasing by 37% and decision-making skills by 38%. Leadership emerged as the sixth most consumed business skill, and consumption of AI ethics and governance courses rose by 98% year-over-year.

Hugo Sarrazin, president and CEO of Udemy, articulated this strategic balance: “In 2026, AI fluency and adaptive skills are no longer nice-to-haves. They’re essential for every organization to stay competitive as skills evolve at a dizzying pace. But AI fluency alone isn’t enough. Our data shows winning organizations are those investing just as much in leadership, adaptability, and human judgment. AI is handling efficiency, but humans are driving effectiveness with skills machines can’t replace.”

The report identifies four critical areas for companies assessing their skills acceleration priorities for 2026:

1. AI Fluency as a Baseline: Professionals must achieve fluid AI usage, coupled with critical thinking about its risks, outputs, and impacts, to drive significant business gains.

2. Adaptive Skills for Transformation: Developing skills like critical thinking, communication, and creativity is crucial for long-term resilience and successful transformation.

3. Embedded Learning: Integrating learning into daily workflows, exemplified by Udemy’s AI Role Play feature (over 3,300 role plays published within three months), shifts to just-in-time upskilling.

4. Leadership and Ethics: Scaling leadership capabilities and fostering ethical considerations are vital to guide AI adoption responsibly.
