UCL Unveils AI Mapper+: Advancing Inclusive and Intelligent Public Transport

TLDR: UCL Computer Science has launched AI Mapper+, a groundbreaking UKRI-funded initiative leveraging generative AI and real-time data to revolutionize public transport accessibility and personalization. Led by Professor Youngjun Cho, the project aims to create smarter, more inclusive travel experiences, particularly for disabled individuals, by offering advanced journey planning solutions and user-friendly interfaces.

London, UK – November 7, 2025 – University College London (UCL) Computer Science has announced the development and launch of AI Mapper+, an innovative system poised to transform public transport into a more intelligent and inclusive network. This UKRI-funded project harnesses the power of generative artificial intelligence and real-time data to deliver personalized and accessible journey planning solutions.

The initiative, spearheaded by Professor Youngjun Cho and his dedicated team, represents a significant leap forward in urban mobility. AI Mapper+ builds upon the foundational work of the AI Mapper project, which focused on creating a generative AI-powered accessible Transport for London (TfL) journey planner specifically designed for disabled people. The core objective remains to revolutionize accessible journey planning by offering novel solutions that fully utilize natural language understanding and provide more accessible, disabled-user-friendly interfaces through human-centred approaches.

Professor Cho’s team emphasizes a co-creation methodology, identifying user needs and developing design insights in close collaboration with stakeholders to ensure the system truly meets the diverse requirements of its users. The backend engine of AI Mapper+ is engineered to support multiple transformer-based language models, enabling it to efficiently process vast amounts of complex real-time data. This data includes various disruption factors, allowing the system to perform sophisticated decision-making for more accessible and comfortable journeys.

AI Mapper+ is designed to address the challenges faced by commuters, particularly those with accessibility needs, by providing dynamic and adaptive travel information. By integrating real-time updates on transport conditions, potential disruptions, and accessibility features, the system can offer optimized routes and personalized recommendations. This not only enhances the travel experience but also promotes greater independence and participation in society for all individuals.
