UBS Report Highlights AI Adoption Outpacing E-commerce and Smartphone Growth

TLDR: A recent report from UBS Global indicates that the adoption rate of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is significantly faster than that observed for e-commerce or smartphones, with US AI adoption rates nearing the 10% threshold that took e-commerce decades to achieve.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is being integrated into industries at an unprecedented pace, far exceeding the adoption rates seen with transformative technologies like e-commerce and smartphones, according to a recent analysis by UBS Global. The financial services firm’s Chief Investment Office (CIO) suggests that overall AI adoption is still in its early stages and far from reaching its peak.

Data from the US Census Bureau’s latest report, which tracks AI adoption across 1.2 million US firms, reveals a substantial increase in the use of AI technology. Adoption rates climbed to 9.2% in the second quarter of 2025, a notable rise from 7.4% in the previous three-month period and 5.7% in December 2024. This rapid acceleration means AI adoption is poised to soon surpass the 10% milestone, a benchmark that took the US e-commerce sector 24 years to reach.

The report highlights that the improvement in AI adoption is broad-based, with some industries already reporting adoption rates between 25-30% and demonstrating tangible use cases. Examples of AI’s impact are evident across various sectors:

Cost Savings: Amazon Q is reportedly saving approximately $260 million annually through the use of coding assistants.

Productivity: Microsoft leverages AI to complete 20-30% of its coding work, significantly boosting developer efficiency.

Customer Service: Around 80% of PayPal’s customer support interactions are now handled by AI, streamlining operations and improving response times.

Content Creation: Two-thirds of subtitle creation for global streaming platforms are generated by AI, showcasing its role in media production.

Healthcare: AI is being utilized to assist in colonoscopies, proving to be twice as effective at detecting abnormal tissues that might otherwise be overlooked.
