TLDR: The U.S. Department of Defense, through its Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO), has awarded contracts worth up to $200 million each to major AI companies including Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, and xAI. This significant funding aims to accelerate the development and integration of advanced AI capabilities, particularly ‘agentic AI workflows,’ for critical national security and military applications.
The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) is significantly bolstering its artificial intelligence capabilities by investing hundreds of millions of dollars into leading AI firms. The Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO) has announced substantial contracts, each valued at up to $200 million, awarded to prominent companies such as Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, and xAI. This strategic financial injection is designed to propel the development of advanced AI solutions for military and national security applications.
According to Dr. Doug Matty, the Chief Digital and AI Officer, this initiative is crucial for ‘accelerating the use of advanced AI’ within the ‘warfighting domain’ and across intelligence, business, and enterprise information systems. The focus is on developing ‘agentic AI workflows,’ which involve more sophisticated AI reasoning to address and act on complex challenges. These capabilities are expected to transform the department’s ability to support warfighters and maintain a strategic advantage over adversaries.
The CDAO, established in 2022 as an arm of the Department of Defense, has a stated mission to accelerate the department’s adoption of data, analytics, and artificial intelligence ‘from the boardroom to the battlefield.’ By leveraging commercially available solutions, the DoD aims to integrate these cutting-edge AI technologies into its joint mission essential tasks. While specific missions were not detailed, the department has indicated interest in applying AI in areas such as intelligence analysis, campaigning, logistics, and data collection.
Notably, xAI, Elon Musk’s AI venture, was among the recipients. This announcement coincided with xAI’s unveiling of ‘Grok for Government,’ a U.S. government-specific production line for its conversational AI chatbot, Grok. This highlights a growing trend of specialized AI solutions being developed for governmental and defense sectors.

In a related development, the U.S. Air Force, through its AFWERX SBIR program, also awarded a $1.25 million contract to Eudia on August 20, 2025. This contract focuses on applying Eudia’s Augmented Intelligence platform to transform procurement processes within the Department of the Air Force, aiming for greater efficiency and accuracy by integrating human expertise directly into AI systems. This demonstrates a broader governmental push towards AI adoption across various operational domains.
