Tracelight Secures $3.6M Seed Funding to Launch AI-Powered Financial Modeling Tool for Excel

TLDR: UK-based AI company Tracelight has successfully raised $3.6 million in seed funding to introduce an innovative Excel-native AI plug-in. This new tool is designed to streamline and automate intricate financial modeling tasks, bridging the gap between traditional financial models and advanced large language models (LLMs). Finance professionals can now leverage natural language prompts for various functions, including formula creation and model validation, significantly enhancing efficiency.

Tracelight, a UK-based artificial intelligence company, has announced a significant milestone with the successful closure of a $3.6 million (£2.7 million) seed funding round. This investment, led by Chalfen Ventures with participation from Acequia Capital, Inovo, EF, and various angel investors, is earmarked to accelerate product development, expand the team, and broaden the company’s global reach to finance and strategy professionals.

The company’s core mission is to simplify the creation and validation of complex financial models, a domain that, despite its critical role in guiding trillions of dollars in mergers, investments, and strategic decisions, has remained largely untouched by the AI revolution. Traditional tools, primarily Microsoft Excel, which is set to mark its 40th anniversary this September, still form the backbone of most financial modeling workflows, with large language models (LLMs) having struggled to make a significant impact until now.

Tracelight aims to bridge this technological gap by transforming spreadsheet logic into LLM-friendly data. Its new AI plug-in integrates directly into the existing Excel workflow, enabling financial analysts and consultants to harness the power of Generative AI. The tool is designed to eliminate repetitive financial modeling tasks, allowing users to write complex formulas, validate models, and autonomously run analyses using simple natural language prompts.

Peter Fuller, co-founder and CEO of Tracelight, emphasized the tool’s impact, stating, “Complex financial models underpin all of the corporate world’s most important decisions. Until now, LLMs have barely touched this workflow. Tracelight is purpose-built for this; it works seamlessly inside the tools analysts already trust. Our aim is to take away the entire mechanical workload of financial modelling. Our users act as directors and orchestrators of AI that is quickly becoming superhuman at the task of Excel analysis.” He highlighted that the tool acts as a ‘force multiplier’ for analysts, augmenting their skills and enabling faster, smarter modeling without requiring a change in their established work methods.

Mike Chalfen, Founding Partner of Chalfen Ventures, praised Tracelight’s approach, noting, “The most magical AI tools work at the highest level of abstraction, making them radically easy to adopt, while understanding and executing complex work under the hood. Tracelight does that. It has taken the world’s most widely used modelling platform and embedded AI where it can have immediate impact. And its rapid adoption by analysts in demanding modelling environments shows just how big the opportunity is.” Hank Vigil, Founder of Acequia Capital, also commented on the enduring reliance on Excel for much of the world’s business logic, even after 40 years, and commended Tracelight for embedding AI where it can have an immediate and profound impact.

The Tracelight AI plug-in is now available as an Excel add-in through the Microsoft Add-In Store, initially targeting individual analysts, consultants, and finance professionals. The newly secured funding will further support its development and broader distribution to a global audience of finance and strategy professionals.
