A cornerstone of Tongcheng’s AI strategy is its proprietary DeepTrip platform. This advanced AI agent, which combines DeepSeek’s reasoning capabilities with Tongcheng’s extensive OTA platform supply chain, streamlines the entire itinerary planning and booking process. DeepTrip enables users to plan complex travel itineraries and book services seamlessly, creating a “closed-loop experience” that significantly boosts user retention and optimizes operational costs by automating tasks like flight-hotel coordination and real-time price adjustments.

The financial impact of this AI adoption is substantial. For the first quarter of 2025, Tongcheng Travel reported a 13.2% year-on-year revenue increase, reaching RMB 4,377.4 million (approximately RMB 4.4 billion). Adjusted net profit surged by an impressive 41.1% to RMB 788.2 million. Furthermore, adjusted EBITDA rose by 41.3% to RMB 1,159.4 million, with margins expanding to 26.5%, underscoring the efficiency gains derived from AI integration.

Tongcheng’s strategic focus on non-first-tier cities, where 87% of its registered users reside, is a key driver of its growth. The company utilizes AI for hyper-personalized pricing and cross-selling, which has been instrumental in increasing average revenue per user and expanding its market reach in these cost-sensitive segments. Monthly Paying Users (MPUs) for Q1 2025 reached a record high of 46.5 million, a 9.2% year-on-year increase, with 68% of new Weixin users originating from lower-tier cities. Annual Paying Users (APUs) also saw a 7.8% increase to 247.3 million, further demonstrating the company’s expanding user base.

Beyond domestic markets, Tongcheng is pursuing global expansion, powered by its AI-driven international platform, HopeGoo. This platform supports 16 currencies and multiple languages, targeting both outbound Chinese travelers and inbound tourists. Algorithmic decision-making within HopeGoo has led to a 40% year-on-year increase in international air ticketing volume and a 50% growth in international hotel room nights sold by 2025. Strategic partnerships, such as with China United Airlines and Wuhan Tianhe International Airport, leverage big data for optimized flight planning and enhanced brand presence.

The company’s success in balancing affordability and profitability is attributed to its algorithmic tools, including the Huixing system for train tickets and the DeepTrip AI agent. These tools enable Tongcheng to offer competitive pricing while maintaining healthy margins. Value-added services, such as event-linked hotel bookings and cross-selling of transport and accommodation packages, further contribute to incremental revenue streams.
