The tech and business sectors, including the Business Council of Australia, enthusiastically promote AI as a generational opportunity to boost productivity.

Productivity, simply defined, is the output of goods and services from a given amount of inputs. It is crucial for a higher standard of living, accounting for 80% of Australia’s income growth over the past three decades. Productivity can be viewed at individual, organizational, or national levels, though tracking how changes at the micro-level translate to national GDP per hour worked remains challenging.

Evidence for AI’s positive impact on productivity exists. However, the evidence is far from conclusive. A survey of 2,500 professionals revealed that generative AI actually increased the workload for 77% of workers, and 47% admitted they didn’t know how to unlock its productivity benefits. Barriers identified include the necessity to verify and correct AI outputs, the need for AI upskilling, and unrealistic expectations. It’s also argued that technology developments take time to influence national productivity, and while some, like the internet, clearly led to improvements, the effects of others, such as mobile phones and social media, are more contested and industry-specific.
