HONG KONG – Tencent has made a significant stride in artificial intelligence development by hosting China’s inaugural all-modal generative recommendation competition, a groundbreaking event that has captivated over 6,000 students globally, including nearly 500 from international universities. Launched on June 16, 2025, the 2025 Tencent Advertising Algorithm Competition challenges participants to leverage cutting-edge AI to develop sophisticated recommendation engines.
The competition, spearheaded by Tencent Marketing Solution (also known as Tencent Ads), is at the forefront of industry innovation, focusing on multi-modal generative large language models (LLMs). Participants are tasked with building recommendation algorithms based on anonymized multi-modal user behavior sequences, which include diverse data such as ad IDs, images, and text. This approach encourages a departure from traditional discriminative recommendation frameworks, pushing contestants to explore novel generative solutions.
Jiang Jie, Vice President of Tencent and a distinguished judge for the competition, emphasized the transformative potential of this technology. “Generative recommendation is reshaping every industry,” stated Jiang. “Through real business scenarios, this competition aims to find trailblazers who can unlock the potential of multi-modal generative AI.” The contest is powered by Tencent’s Angel Machine Learning Platform, which provides essential computing resources and a robust training inference platform, also supporting the development of Tencent’s Hunyuan large language model.
The initiative is a testament to Tencent’s deep commitment to cultivating AI talent and accelerating technological innovation. The competition boasts a lucrative total prize pool of 3.6 million RMB (over USD 418,000). The top team will receive a grand prize of 2 million RMB, with runner-ups securing 600,000 RMB, third-placed teams 300,000 RMB, and teams ranking fourth through tenth each receiving 100,000 RMB.
Beyond the financial incentives, the competition offers unparalleled career opportunities at Tencent. Members of the top 10 teams are guaranteed full-time job offers, while finalists are considered for formal positions, and semi-finalists receive internship offers. This direct pipeline to employment highlights Tencent’s strategy to integrate top talent into its workforce. Previous participants of the Tencent Advertising Algorithm Competition have already made significant contributions; for instance, Zhang Chang, an alumnus, successfully applied competition insights to boost ad click-through rates by 2% in real-world recommendation systems. Similarly, Wang Zhaobing and Li Qiang have contributed to Tencent’s commercialization efforts on platforms like Tencent Video and the Tencent Advertising Alliance.
