Taylor Wessing Leads Legal Sector’s AI Transformation with Strategic Adoption and In-House Tools

TLDR: Global law firm Taylor Wessing is at the forefront of integrating generative AI (GenAI) into its operations, driven by a ‘buy and build’ strategy and a strong focus on responsible adoption. The firm’s proprietary tool, LitiumTW, launched in late 2023, is enhancing efficiency, client service, and enabling lawyers to concentrate on complex legal challenges, marking a significant shift in the business of law.

Taylor Wessing, a prominent global law firm, has emerged as a leader in leveraging generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) to revolutionize the legal business. The firm embarked on its AI journey approximately three years ago, systematically conducting trials, piloting technologies, and developing its own AI tools, alongside forming strategic partnerships with AI providers. This proactive approach is significantly reshaping how legal services are delivered, particularly within large law firms.

According to Emma Danks, Head of the UK Corporate Group and a member of the UK Executive Board at Taylor Wessing, the firm’s exploration into AI’s impact on the business of law has been ongoing since 2023, fueled by both client interest and its strong presence in the technology sector. Mark Rendall, IT Director, and Gerard Frith, Entrepreneur-in-Residence, have been instrumental in guiding this transformation.

Taylor Wessing adopted a methodical and collaborative ‘buy and build’ strategy for GenAI, aligning technological ambition with practical business needs. Mark Rendall emphasized their focus on ‘responsible adoption, education and value creation for both our people and clients,’ aiming to democratize AI within the firm through education and internal experimentation. This strategy culminated in the launch of LitiumTW, their flagship GenAI tool, in the UK in November 2023, followed by a firmwide rollout in January 2024. LitiumTW is designed to assist lawyers and business services teams in managing various processes and tasks, enabling the development of tailored solutions through familiar interfaces.

The integration of AI, particularly LitiumTW, is yielding significant efficiency gains and enhancing client service. Mike Beswick, Business Development, Marketing, and Communications Director at Taylor Wessing, highlighted that ‘AI can take that repeatable work off people’s desks. The tasks that were very time-consuming in the past are now being done’ by AI. This allows legal professionals to dedicate more time to complex problem-solving and strategic advice, improving the quality of work and client value. The firm also recognizes that embracing AI creates a strategic advantage, helping them meet client expectations for speed, cost-effectiveness, and demonstrating a forward-thinking approach.

Responsible AI adoption is a cornerstone of Taylor Wessing’s strategy. Emma Danks explained that the firm implemented a comprehensive GenAI policy in 2023, with robust involvement from its risk team. Regular firmwide update sessions, held every four to six months, reinforce the policy, particularly emphasizing the critical importance of not using client or private data in public AI tools. This commitment ensures data privacy and fosters a secure, trusted framework for AI deployment.

Beyond its internal innovations, Taylor Wessing is also forging external alliances, such as its partnership with Legora for AI innovation, further solidifying its position at the forefront of legal tech. The firm’s proactive stance aligns with broader industry trends, where AI is no longer an experiment but a strategic imperative for law firms seeking to optimize operations, reduce costs, and remain competitive in a rapidly evolving legal landscape.
