TLDR: Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is making a significant strategic pivot towards artificial intelligence, committing billions in investments for AI infrastructure and undertaking a massive reskilling initiative for its workforce. The company aims to become the world’s largest AI-led technology services firm, while also creating new AI-focused jobs globally and managing workforce adjustments.
India’s largest IT services company, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), is undergoing a substantial strategic shift, focusing heavily on artificial intelligence (AI) and digital infrastructure. The company plans to invest between $5 billion and $6 billion over the next few years to build extensive data centers and enhance its AI capabilities. This ambitious initiative is designed to transform TCS into the world’s largest AI-led technology services firm, as confirmed by Samir Seksaria, Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of TCS.
As a core component of its AI expansion, TCS intends to establish one gigawatt (GW) of data center capacity over the coming years. This robust digital infrastructure will be critical for supporting AI training, cloud computing, and various enterprise services. The initial phase of this development will involve a 150-megawatt capacity, requiring an investment of approximately $1 billion, and is projected to become operational within 14 to 18 months. The capacity will then gradually scale up to one gigawatt over time.
In parallel with these infrastructure investments, TCS is prioritizing the reskilling of its vast workforce to align with the demands of the evolving technological landscape. The company is focusing on high-skill, high-intensity digital roles and has already seen its AI-skilled workforce double to 1.6 lakh (160,000 employees). This extensive reskilling program is a direct response to the challenges and opportunities presented by rapid advancements in AI.
Globally, TCS is also committed to creating new employment opportunities in the AI sector. The company plans to generate 5,000 new jobs in the UK over the next three years, which will include the establishment of a new AI experience zone and design studio in London. This expansion underscores TCS’s strategic investment in the UK, its second-largest market worldwide.
However, this period of transformation also involves workforce adjustments. TCS announced a reduction of nearly 2% of its global workforce in 2025, affecting over 12,200 employees. The company clarified that these reductions are not based on individual performance but are a consequence of strategic shifts, including the widespread deployment of AI, the restructuring of delivery models, and the realignment of workforce models to meet emerging client needs. TCS is providing a comprehensive transition package for affected employees, which includes severance benefits and career counseling services.
