TLDR: Tata Communications has announced a strategic collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to deploy a high-capacity, AI-ready network in India. This initiative aims to accelerate generative AI adoption and cloud innovation by connecting major AWS infrastructure locations in Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Chennai with ultra-low latency and high-bandwidth connectivity, supporting demanding AI and machine learning workloads.
In a significant stride towards bolstering India’s digital infrastructure and accelerating the adoption of artificial intelligence, Tata Communications has forged a strategic alliance with Amazon Web Services (AWS). The collaboration focuses on establishing an advanced, AI-ready network across the nation, marking one of Tata Communications’ largest network deployments in India in terms of scale, size, and bandwidth.
The core of this ambitious project involves the creation of a high-capacity, resilient long-distance network that will intricately connect three pivotal AWS infrastructure locations in India: Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Chennai. This comprehensive national long-haul network is designed to provide a robust infrastructure backbone, essential for supporting demanding AI and machine learning (ML) workloads throughout the country. AWS currently operates two data center regions in India (Mumbai and Hyderabad), along with AWS Direct Connect and AWS Edge Network infrastructure in Chennai.
The new network will feature express routes with ultra-low latency and high-bandwidth connections, critical requirements for compute-intensive AI applications, 5G, and high-performance computing. By leveraging Tata Communications’ state-of-the-art network, AWS will further empower Indian businesses to develop, train, and deploy scalable generative AI applications and AI models more efficiently and securely.
This enhanced network infrastructure is poised to foster innovation across vital sectors such as healthcare, finance, and education, enabling businesses to build, train, and deploy scalable AI applications seamlessly. The partnership also emphasizes robust security measures and adherence to regulatory standards to safeguard data integrity and privacy, addressing a paramount concern in the evolving AI landscape.
Genius Wong, Executive Vice President, Core and Next-Gen Connectivity at Tata Communications, commented on the collaboration, stating, “This association marks our largest ever National Long-Distance program and showcases Tata Communications’ unparalleled capability to support large-capacity, complex projects requiring scaled network solutions. AI is transforming industries globally, and our collaboration with AWS positions us at the forefront of this revolution in India. Together, we’re enabling a network that not only meets the current demands but anticipates the needs of tomorrow. By building a tailored network solution, we’re ushering in an AI era in India, reinforcing our position as the long-term partner of choice for global technology leaders.”
Echoing this sentiment, Jesse Dougherty, Vice President for Network Edge Services at Amazon Web Services, added, “We are excited to work with Tata Communications to establish an advanced in-country network in India. The infrastructure is designed to support the most data-intensive workloads, like 5G, generative AI, and high-performance computing. This collaboration with Tata Communications will further enable our customers in India to innovate at scale with cloud and generative AI, and drive growth in India’s rapidly expanding digital economy.”
