Taiwan Semiconductor Achieves Record Q3 Profits Driven by Surging AI Chip Demand

TLDR: Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has announced record-breaking financial results for the third quarter of 2025, with profits surging by 39.1% year-over-year. This impressive performance was primarily fueled by robust demand for advanced chips essential for artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing applications, exceeding market expectations.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world’s leading contract chipmaker, reported exceptional financial performance for the third quarter ended September 30, 2025, setting new records for profitability. The company’s net profit soared by an impressive 39.1% year-over-year, reaching NT$452.30 billion. Diluted earnings per share (EPS) also saw a significant increase of 39.0% year-over-year, amounting to NT$17.44 (US$2.92 per ADR unit).

Consolidated revenue for the quarter stood at NT$989.92 billion. In U.S. dollar terms, TSMC’s third-quarter revenue was $33.10 billion, marking a substantial 40.8% increase year-over-year and a 10.1% rise from the previous quarter. This figure comfortably surpassed market expectations, which had an LSEG SmartEstimate of T$973.26 billion and an average analyst expectation of NT$962.8 billion (US$31.52 billion). The reported revenue also landed at the higher end of TSMC’s own guidance issued in July, which projected sales between $31.8 billion and $33 billion.

The strong financial results are largely attributed to the insatiable demand for chips powering artificial intelligence and high-performance computing. TSMC’s advanced process technologies played a crucial role, with 3-nanometer shipments contributing 23% of total wafer revenue, 5-nanometer accounting for 37%, and 7-nanometer for 14%. Collectively, advanced technologies (7-nanometer and more advanced) represented 74% of the total wafer revenue.

Wendell Huang, Senior VP and Chief Financial Officer of TSMC, commented on the performance, stating, ‘Our business in the third quarter was supported by strong demand for our leading-edge process technologies. Moving into fourth quarter 2025, we expect our business to be supported by continued strong demand for our leading-edge process technologies.’

Key clients such as NVIDIA and Apple continue to drive demand for TSMC’s cutting-edge manufacturing capabilities, with Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) also relying on their advanced processes. The company has also seen robust demand for its AI-focused products, including Chip-on-Wafer-on-Substrate advanced packaging solutions.

Looking ahead to the fourth quarter of 2025, TSMC management anticipates revenue to be between US$32.2 billion and US$33.4 billion. Gross profit margin is expected to range from 59% to 61%, while the operating profit margin is projected to be between 49% and 51%.

Analysts remain optimistic about TSMC’s trajectory. Wedbush Securities analyst Matt Bryson noted, ‘TSMC appears to be firing on all cylinders,’ highlighting ongoing AI chip growth, anticipated price increases, and a rebound in PC sales as key drivers for future sales and earnings. Bryson maintains an ‘outperform’ rating for TSM stock.
