Survey Reveals High AI Adoption Among Taiwanese Ninth-Graders

TLDR: A recent survey by Taiwan’s National Academy of Educational Research and Academia Sinica found that approximately 69% of ninth-graders actively use artificial intelligence, primarily for academic and creative tasks. While 94.2% are aware of generative AI, a significant portion are not heavy users, indicating a balanced integration of the technology into their routines. Over half of the students reported receiving AI instruction from their teachers.

Taipei, Taiwan – A comprehensive survey conducted by the National Academy of Educational Research (NAER) and Academia Sinica has revealed that a substantial majority of ninth-grade students in Taiwan are actively engaging with artificial intelligence. The study, part of the ongoing Taiwan Assessment of Student Achievement Longitudinal Study, found that approximately 69% of ninth-graders utilize AI tools in their daily lives and studies.

The survey highlighted that the most common applications of AI among these students include assistance with homework, the creation of images and videos, and general chatting. Furthermore, the research indicated a high level of awareness regarding generative AI technologies, with 94.2% of students reporting familiarity with such tools. However, 31% of those aware stated they had never actually used them, suggesting a gap between knowledge and practical application.

Delving into usage frequency, the survey provided detailed insights: 6.8% of generative AI users reported daily engagement, 3.9% used it five to six times per week, 12.2% three to four times per week, and a significant 46% utilized AI once or twice a week. Students cited a diverse range of purposes for AI, including translation, research, content creation, and language learning, underscoring its integration into both academic and creative pursuits.

Teacher involvement in AI education also emerged as a key finding. About 53.2% of ninth-graders stated that their teachers had provided instruction on how to use generative AI, while 46.8% had not received such guidance. The NAER suggests that this indicates a growing recognition among educators of the technology’s importance, with the potential for further improvement in adoption rates as more schools incorporate AI into their curricula.

The NAER commented on these findings, noting that the balanced use of AI by students, coupled with the disparity between awareness and heavy usage, suggests that most students are not becoming overly reliant on the technology. This trend reflects how younger, digitally native generations are more amenable to new technologies, integrating them in a measured way. The academy emphasized that the wide array of uses for AI tools demonstrates their extensive capabilities and future potential in education.
