Supercell Establishes Inaugural AI Innovation Lab in San Francisco, Led by Former Niantic Project Manager

TLDR: Supercell has officially launched its first AI Innovation Lab in San Francisco, a strategic move to push the boundaries of artificial intelligence in gaming. The new initiative is spearheaded by Jessica Jung, a former project manager lead from Niantic, who brings a wealth of experience in AR and consumer AI. The lab aims to empower developers and create novel entertainment experiences through advanced AI applications.

Gaming giant Supercell has announced the establishment of its pioneering AI Innovation Lab in San Francisco, signaling a significant commitment to integrating advanced artificial intelligence into the future of interactive entertainment. The new lab is set to be a hub for groundbreaking research and development, with a clear mandate to explore how AI can revolutionize game creation and player experiences.

Leading this ambitious venture is Jessica Jung, a distinguished former project manager lead from Niantic. Jung, who previously worked on Niantic’s augmented reality (AR) virtual pet app and was in the process of building her own consumer AI startup focused on interaction models and multimodal agents, expressed her enthusiasm for the new role. In a LinkedIn post, she stated that the opportunity was one she ‘couldn’t refuse,’ highlighting Supercell’s clear intent to ‘explore at the edge of what’s possible with AI and build completely new entertainment categories.’

The core mission of the AI Innovation Lab is to empower developers with ‘superpowers’ through AI, enabling them to realize their creative visions and forge ‘novel new interaction loops that we’ve never seen before.’ Jung emphasized that the lab is being built ‘from 0->1,’ indicating a foundational approach to innovation rather than incremental improvements.

This San Francisco expansion follows Supercell’s earlier pilot AI Innovation Lab in Helsinki and aligns with the company’s growing bullishness on AI’s potential in gaming. Supercell CEO and co-founder Ilkka Paananen has previously voiced his excitement about the company’s AI endeavors, noting how discussions with leaders in gaming and AI, and time spent at the Helsinki pilot lab, have energized him. Paananen believes that just as Supercell disrupted the gaming ecosystem with mobile over a decade ago, they are now poised to become innovators once again through AI.
