Starling Bank Unveils AI-Powered ‘Spending Intelligence’ Tool, Deepening Google Cloud Partnership

TLDR: Starling Bank has launched ‘Spending Intelligence,’ a new AI-driven feature powered by Google’s Gemini models, enabling customers to gain insights into their financial habits through natural language queries. This development, announced at the Google Cloud Summit London, highlights Starling’s eight-year collaboration with Google Cloud and its strategic shift towards customer-facing AI applications.

Starling Bank, a leading UK challenger bank, has introduced ‘Spending Intelligence,’ an innovative artificial intelligence tool designed to revolutionize how its 4.5 million customers interact with their finances. Unveiled at the recent Google Cloud Summit London, the new feature leverages Google’s advanced Gemini models to allow users to ask natural language questions about their spending habits, receiving instant, insightful analysis.

Harriet Rees, Chief Information Officer at Starling Bank, emphasized the tool’s purpose: ‘We wanted to develop a tool to help customers to be able to ask really simple questions about their finances and get really simple answers.’ She elaborated that ‘Spending Intelligence, powered by Gemini, allows customers to use natural language – text or voice – to ask really simple questions like: ‘How much did I spend on transport last month?’ or ‘What did I spend on holidays last year?’ The system then provides immediate, graphical breakdowns of their transactional data, aiming to foster better financial understanding and control.

This launch marks a significant milestone in Starling’s long-standing, eight-year partnership with Google Cloud. Starling has built its entire technological infrastructure on Google Cloud services, utilizing Google Workspace for daily operations, BigQuery for its data warehouse, and Vertex AI for engineering and developer pipelines, ensuring rapid and secure model deployment. Rees noted that Google was a ‘natural choice’ due to its assurances around data sovereignty and security.

While Starling has been integrating machine learning across its operations for approximately seven years, 2024 signifies a strategic pivot towards direct customer-facing AI applications. ‘Our AI journey is not a new one,’ Rees stated, ‘but this year for us, we had one aim, and that was to bring AI into the hands of our customers.’ Beyond ‘Spending Intelligence,’ Starling plans to develop similar AI applications focused on scam detection and prevention, with ambitions to integrate AI capabilities across its entire suite of services.

Google Cloud highlighted Starling Bank as a prime example of how its AI technologies are delivering tangible, real-world value for enterprises, moving beyond theoretical potential to concrete business outcomes. This collaboration underscores Google’s strategy to solidify its position in the competitive cloud market by showcasing the immediate benefits of its advanced AI stack.

Furthermore, Starling’s AI journey extends beyond its domestic customer base. Through its proprietary ‘Engine’ platform, the bank is already exporting its technology to financial institutions in Romania and Australia, with clear plans for broader global expansion. This demonstrates Starling’s commitment not only to enhancing its own customer experience but also to enabling other organizations with its innovative, cloud-native banking solutions.
