Spokane Falls Community College Bolsters Tech Education with Key Investments in AI and Cybersecurity

TLDR: Spokane Falls Community College (SFCC) has received significant state funding to enhance its Artificial Intelligence (AI) program, alongside expanding its offerings in AI applications for healthcare and its nationally recognized cybersecurity initiatives. These investments aim to prepare students for high-demand careers in critical technology sectors.

Spokane Falls Community College (SFCC) is making substantial strides in preparing its students for the future of technology, with a particular focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Cybersecurity. The institution recently secured $151,762 in state funding for its Artificial Intelligence program, a testament to its commitment to developing a skilled workforce in high-demand fields. This funding was part of a broader initiative by the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges, which awarded grants to nine colleges to support programs leading to employment in critical sectors.

William Belden, who oversees the application and award process for the State Board, emphasized the importance of these investments, stating, “We’re grateful for the Legislature’s investments. These programs help students prepare for in-demand and living-wage careers with industries that are looking to hire. It all contributes to stronger families and communities.” SFCC has until June 2026 to utilize these funds, ensuring a sustained impact on its AI curriculum and student opportunities.

Beyond the core AI program, SFCC is also addressing specific industry needs, such as the integration of AI in healthcare. The college is offering a two-day online course titled ‘AI – Healthcare,’ scheduled from October 6-8, 2025. This course is designed to introduce healthcare professionals and technologists to the fundamentals of AI and its practical applications in clinical and operational environments. Topics covered include AI’s role in diagnostics, patient care, workflow automation, and predictive analytics, alongside crucial discussions on ethical considerations, data privacy, and emerging trends in digital health. Participants who complete the course will earn a credential recognizing their foundational knowledge in AI in healthcare.

In the realm of cybersecurity, SFCC continues to be a leader. Its Cyber Center holds the prestigious designation as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense education (CAE-CD) from both the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security. The Cyber Center functions as a dynamic hub for teaching and exploration, fostering innovation and collaboration between academia and the wider community. It features an Interactive Computer Classroom and Lab Space, a SOC Laboratory Space for program students, and a Distance Learning Interactive Space, providing comprehensive resources for its Associates of Applied Science degree in Information Technology with a cybersecurity focus. The program is led by Mark Neufville, with support from Dr. Sarah Martin, Dean of Computing, Math and Science, and other dedicated faculty members.
