Veteran filmmaker Shekhar Kapur is venturing into uncharted creative territory with ‘Warlord,’ a groundbreaking science fiction series produced entirely through generative artificial intelligence. This ambitious project, developed in collaboration with Mumbai-based Studio Blo, marks a significant departure from traditional filmmaking, with its teaser released on July 29, 2025. The full first episode is anticipated within the next two to three months.
‘Warlord’ weaves together elements of sci-fi, fantasy, and romance, centering on an interdimensional warrior whose survival hinges on his lover from another dimension. As Kapur explains, ‘The only time that lover can bring him to her is when he’s absolutely close to death… So if the sword hits him and he’s so close to death, she shifts him to a different dimension, and you might just see the sword going through him, but he’s not there.’ This unique narrative is underpinned by the concept of mystical crystals, described as fundamental particles beyond neutrinos that ‘create the universe’ but exist for only a fleeting ‘millionth of a millionth of a millionth of a millionth of a second.’ These crystals are central to the galaxy’s energy and are fiercely defended by warriors to maintain cosmic balance.
The production of ‘Warlord’ showcases the transformative power of AI in cinema. Studio Blo, a generative AI company established in 2024 with a presence in Dubai, London, and Los Angeles, has been instrumental in bringing Kapur’s vision to life. Sequences that would traditionally take months to produce are now being completed in mere weeks, thanks to AI-driven algorithms generating visuals from storyboards to final images. Dipankar Mukherjee, co-founder and CEO of Studio Blo, noted Kapur’s challenging brief: ‘He came with a series of impossibilities. A complete series made by AI, and open-source IP. We had to reinvent both tech and storytelling.’
Kapur views AI as a democratizing force in the film industry, capable of disrupting the dominance of large studios and streaming platforms. He stated, ‘With AI, we now have the tools to imagine stories that go beyond dimensions of time, space, and consciousness.’ He believes AI will ‘destroy the myth of budgets, destroy the myth of being big,’ likening its potential impact to Napster’s disruption of the music industry.

Beyond the series itself, Kapur has ambitious plans to make all production design and characters open source, fostering what he calls ‘a rainforest of ideas.’ Creators will be able to adapt elements from ‘Warlord’ for a nominal fee of one cent per use, provided their creations also remain open source. This initiative aims to empower independent artists and expand the cinematic universe collaboratively. The ‘Warlord’ universe is envisioned to extend into films, immersive games, and even educational platforms. Kapur also plans to launch an AI-focused film school in Mumbai’s Dharavi, further democratizing access to future-ready filmmaking tools and nurturing new generations of creators.
