SenseTime to Spin Off Healthcare Division, Harnessing Advanced AI for Medical Innovation

TLDR: Hong Kong-listed AI giant SenseTime is set to spin off its healthcare platform into a new, independent entity. This strategic move aims to leverage the transformative power of advanced Large Language Models (LLMs) and generative AI in the medical sector. The new company has already secured pre-A round funding and will focus on AI-enabled smart hospital solutions, enhancing diagnostics, treatment, and patient services.

SenseTime, a prominent Hong Kong-listed artificial intelligence company, has announced its plans to spin off its healthcare platform, SenseTime Healthcare, into a new, independent entity. This strategic decision is driven by the rapid advancements in Large Language Models (LLMs) and generative AI, which are profoundly transforming the medical field.

The newly formed healthcare company aims to capitalize on these technological shifts by focusing on innovative AI-enabled smart hospital solutions. These solutions encompass a wide range of services, including diagnostic and treatment assistance, AI-powered patient services, and comprehensive AI medical and hospital group services. Professor Li Hongsheng, the chief scientist for medical foundation models at SenseTime Healthcare, highlighted the integrated nature of their offerings. “The solution is like an AI-enabled medical journey for patients, beginning from the moment they make an appointment,” Li explained. He further elaborated, “For instance, patients can articulate their symptoms using the language model, which then directs them to the most appropriate department.” The platform is also designed to provide continuous care, extending to post-discharge follow-up services.

SenseTime’s healthcare solution integrates sophisticated AI algorithms with advanced image post-processing technology. This combination is engineered to support clinical departments and hospitals throughout the entire patient journey, from initial diagnosis and treatment to recovery. Professor Li emphasized the collaborative role of AI and human expertise, stating, “While the AI generates automatic results, these will still be verified by human doctors, as we aim to enhance their efficiency throughout the process.”

To fuel the growth of this new venture, SenseTime is actively seeking external investments. Professor Li confirmed, “We are seeking new investments. We have successfully completed a pre-A funding round.” This move underscores SenseTime’s commitment to generative AI as a core business and a significant growth engine. The company reported a remarkable 256% growth in its generative AI segment during the first half of 2024, contributing to 60% of its total revenue.
