Sejong University Forges Ahead as a Leading Hub for Advanced Technologies and Global Talent in South Korea

The university is significantly expanding its engineering colleges and developing cutting-edge research and study centers dedicated to artificial intelligence (AI) and data analysis, fabless semiconductor technologies, and aerospace.

This ambitious expansion comes at a critical time for South Korea, which faces significant demographic challenges. Jonghwa Eom, President of Sejong University, highlighted the nation’s limited labor force globalization and a projected labor shortage of 7.4 million workers by 2040 due to a major demographic shift. This concern is underscored by President Yoon Suk Yeol’s declaration of South Korea’s ultralow birth rate as a ‘demographic national emergency.’ Currently, foreign residents constitute only about 5% of South Korea’s population (2.5 million), a stark contrast to the 15% to 25% seen in many European countries, indicating a substantial gap in the foreign workforce.

In response to these national challenges, Sejong University is actively working to bridge the labor gap by prioritizing the expansion of doctoral programs for international students, particularly in natural sciences and engineering. While many institutions focus on undergraduate growth, Sejong is cultivating a highly skilled workforce for the future through advanced degrees. This aligns with the Ministry of Education’s ‘Study Korea 300K Project,’ which aims to attract 300,000 international students by 2027.

The university’s commitment to technological advancement is evident in its specialized academic structures. The AI Convergence College, for instance, integrates computer science, AI, and data science with electrical engineering, robotics, and mechatronics, establishing a robust ecosystem for high-tech industries. Furthermore, Sejong University acknowledges the pervasive influence of digital transformation (DX) and IT technologies, including generative AI, on global education. The institution is proactively adapting its assessment methods to effectively integrate these new tools into the learning process, rather than disregarding them.
