Saudi Arabia’s Digital Leap: Robust Infrastructure Paves the Way for AI Era and Vision 2030

TLDR: Saudi Arabia is making significant strides in modernizing its digital infrastructure, recognizing its critical role in advancing the AI era and achieving the ambitious goals of Vision 2030. A recent Cisco study highlights that enterprises are fundamentally reshaping their networks to support AI-driven workloads, with IT leaders prioritizing secure, resilient, and intelligent networking to drive growth and efficiency.

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – As Saudi Arabia accelerates its transformation under Vision 2030, the Kingdom is placing unprecedented emphasis on developing a robust digital infrastructure, a move deemed critical for harnessing the full potential of the artificial intelligence (AI) era. This strategic shift was underscored by key local findings from a global networking study by Cisco, revealed ahead of its flagship ‘Cisco Connect – CXO Edition’ event in Riyadh.

The study highlights how AI assistants, agents, and data-driven workloads are fundamentally reshaping enterprise infrastructure, creating demands for faster, more dynamic, more latency-sensitive, and increasingly complex network traffic. The proliferation of connected devices, the imperative for 24/7 uptime, and escalating cybersecurity threats are further compelling IT infrastructure to adapt and evolve rapidly. IT leaders across the Kingdom are re-evaluating the core functions of their networks, recognizing their pivotal role in enabling business growth and ensuring robust protection.

Salman Faqeeh, the Managing Director of Cisco in Saudi Arabia, commented on these findings, stating, “Our research highlights a critical shift in network architecture that aligns with Saudi Arabia’s focus on innovation. The AI era relies on ultra-fast, low-latency, and highly secure networks, and KSA is leading the way by building the AI infrastructure of the future. At Cisco, we are proud to partner with Saudi Arabia to develop networks that will drive the Kingdom’s ambitious Vision 2030 goals.”

Key Insights into Saudi Arabia’s Networking Future:

Strategic Priority: All participants in the study affirmed that a modernized network is critical for the successful rollout of AI, IoT, and cloud technologies. Reflecting this priority, a significant 94% of IT leaders in the Kingdom plan to increase the share of their overall IT budget allocated to networking.

Mission-Critical Security: Secure networking is considered paramount, with 98% of respondents stating its importance for their operations and growth, and 65% deeming it critical. Furthermore, 97% believe that an improved network will significantly enhance their cybersecurity posture.

Demand for Resilient Networks: The advent of AI intensifies the need for resilient networks. A striking 97% of IT leaders consider a resilient network critical, especially given that 73% faced major outages in the past two years, largely due to congestion, cyberattacks, and misconfigurations.

Revenue Growth and Cost Savings: Leaders are increasingly looking to AI to drive revenue. The study found that 92% believe improved networks will directly drive revenue, and 97% anticipate meaningful cost savings through smarter operations, fewer outages, and reduced energy consumption.

Reshaping Computing Infrastructure: AI is profoundly reshaping computing infrastructure. A notable 67% of data centers currently cannot meet today’s AI demands, prompting 90% of organizations to plan capacity expansion, either on-premise, in the cloud, or both.

Smarter Networks: A vast majority, 98%, believe that autonomous, AI-powered networks are essential for future growth. However, only 40% have currently deployed the intelligent capabilities, such as segmentation, visibility, and control, necessary to make their networks truly adaptive.

Broader National AI Ambitions:

These findings align with Saudi Arabia’s broader national strategy to become a global technology powerhouse. Under Vision 2030, spearheaded by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the Kingdom aims to diversify its economy and establish itself as a leader in technological innovation. The Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) has developed a National Strategy for Data and AI, targeting a position among the top nations in AI by 2030.

Significant investments underscore this commitment, with over $14.9 billion in AI investments announced at events like LEAP 2025, an annual tech conference in Riyadh. These funds are allocated to infrastructure, AI development, and funding rounds for startups. Key projects like the Desert Dragon Data Centers are set to deliver 187 megawatts of capacity across major cities including Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, and Neom. The Kingdom is also heavily investing in digital infrastructure, including undersea cables, hyperscale data centers, and cross-border fiber networks, solidifying its ambition to become a global digital transit hub.
