TLDR: The Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and other partners, has launched new AI learning resources and a comprehensive AI curriculum for over six million students across Saudi Arabia’s general education system, starting the 2025-2026 academic year. This initiative, part of the ‘Back to School’ campaign and aligned with Vision 2030, aims to empower a generation with critical AI skills, foster innovation, and position the Kingdom as a global leader in data and AI.
RIYADH – In a landmark move to cultivate a tech-driven future, the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) has spearheaded the introduction of a nationwide artificial intelligence (AI) curriculum for over six million students in Saudi Arabia’s general education system. This transformative initiative, set to commence in the 2025-2026 academic year, marks the Kingdom’s first comprehensive integration of AI into its educational framework.
The effort is a collaborative triumph involving the National Centre for Curriculum Development, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, and SDAIA. It is a strategic pillar of the Ministry of Education’s ‘Back to School’ campaign and aligns directly with Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to diversify the economy and build a knowledge-based society capable of global competitiveness.
The new AI curriculum is meticulously designed to equip students with both theoretical knowledge and practical applications of AI. It seeks to enhance their understanding of AI’s role in solving real-world digital challenges, encourage creative thinking, and prepare them for advanced studies and future careers in a field that is increasingly defining the global job market. The curriculum features interactive units tailored to different age groups, ensuring age-appropriate and engaging learning experiences across all educational levels.
SDAIA’s leadership extends beyond the curriculum. The authority has launched nationwide programs to build AI capabilities across all educational stages, including local and international training initiatives often led by leading global AI experts. A significant development is the Generative AI Usage Guide for schools, jointly issued by the Ministry of Education and SDAIA, which promotes the ethical and effective use of AI in classrooms while emphasizing the indispensable role of teachers.
Further solidifying the educational infrastructure, SDAIA, in partnership with the Education and Training Evaluation Commission, unveiled the Saudi Academic Framework for AI Qualifications, known as Education Intelligence. This framework ensures that AI-related academic programs meet stringent international standards, thereby boosting the employability and global competitiveness of Saudi graduates.
To broaden AI literacy beyond formal schooling, SDAIA, in collaboration with the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development and the Ministry of Education, launched the SAMAI initiative. This ambitious program aims to empower one million Saudis with essential AI knowledge and skills, with over 500,000 participants already registered, spanning students to seasoned professionals. Additionally, the AI Scholarship Program, a joint effort between SDAIA, the Ministry of Education, and the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Scholarship Program, provides exceptional Saudi students with opportunities to pursue AI and data science studies at premier global universities.
Rounding out its multi-pronged strategy, SDAIA has partnered with tech giant NVIDIA to establish the Generative AI Academy, a crucial component of the broader SDAIA Academy. This program is dedicated to nurturing a new generation of highly skilled AI professionals poised to compete and innovate on the international stage.
