TLDR: Santander UK has implemented an advanced Artificial Intelligence tool, developed by ThetaRay, to identify and combat human trafficking. This AI-driven system analyzes financial transactions to detect subtle patterns indicative of exploitation, generating hundreds of actionable leads for the National Crime Agency and significantly bolstering the bank’s anti-money laundering efforts.
Santander UK has announced a significant advancement in its fight against financial crime, deploying an Artificial Intelligence tool to actively assist in dismantling human trafficking networks. The high street lender revealed that this innovative system, developed in collaboration with fintech software and big data analytics firm ThetaRay, has already generated hundreds of crucial leads for police to investigate and disrupt gangs operating across Britain.
Jas Narang, Santander UK’s chief transformation, data, and AI officer, highlighted the tool’s efficacy, stating, “At Santander, we have implemented an AI tool to detect suspicious activity on customers’ accounts – helping us uncover potential cases of human trafficking and escalate them to the National Crime Agency.” He further emphasized that this initiative marks a ‘first for Santander,’ elevating their financial crime controls and coverage to an unprecedented level, with its initial success paving the way for broader AI deployments within the bank.
The AI tool operates by meticulously scouring vast amounts of transaction data, looking for suspicious activity trends that often go unnoticed by traditional rule-based systems. These patterns can include recurring payments to classified ad sites or adult services websites, numerous small cash withdrawals from ATMs, and international flight and accommodation bookings. While individually these transactions might appear innocuous, the AI’s sophisticated algorithms are designed to spot the underlying patterns and subtle indicators of exploitation, providing context across borders and behaviors.
Once an alert is generated, Santander’s dedicated financial crime team of experts investigates the findings. If deemed necessary, the information is swiftly escalated to law enforcement, specifically the National Crime Agency (NCA), enabling them to take prompt action while the leads are still active. This proactive approach is critical in combating human trafficking, a global crisis that, according to the International Labour Organisation, traps approximately 28 million people in forced labor, commercial sexual exploitation, or other forms of modern slavery.

The collaboration between Santander and ThetaRay has been recognized for its impact, receiving the ‘Best Use of Data for Human Trafficking Detection’ award at the 2024 Digital Transformation Awards. ThetaRay’s ‘Cognitive AI Transaction Monitoring’ solution is designed to learn what constitutes ‘normal’ behavior for each customer and network, then precisely highlight deviations without the biases or fatigue inherent in human-only analysis. Looking ahead, Santander plans to extend the application of this AI technology to address other complex financial crimes, including child sexual exploitation.
