Samsung Electronics officially opened its ninth annual Samsung AI Forum on September 15, 2025, a two-day event set to conclude on September 16. This global gathering serves as a critical platform for leading scholars and industry experts to converge, share the latest advancements in artificial intelligence, and chart future research directions. The forum underscores Samsung’s strategic commitment to integrating AI across its diverse operations, aiming to develop foundational technologies that enhance AI’s intuitiveness and seamless integration into daily life and industry.
In his opening remarks, Young Hyun Jun, Vice Chairman and CEO of Samsung Electronics, emphasized the company’s vision: “Samsung is applying AI across our operations to develop foundational technologies that make AI more intuitive and seamless.” He further highlighted the forum’s role in fostering meaningful exchanges, stating, “This year’s Samsung AI Forum brings together leading experts from industry and academia to discuss how AI is transforming society and industry, and to share insights in what we expect will be a meaningful exchange of ideas.”
Day One of the forum, hosted by Samsung’s Device Solutions (DS) Division, took place near Samsung’s semiconductor site in Yongin, Korea. The theme for the day was ‘Vertical AI Strategies and Vision for the Semiconductor Industry,’ focusing on the intersection of AI and semiconductor technology. A highlight of the first day was the keynote address by Yoshua Bengio, a Professor at the University of Montreal and a renowned pioneer in deep learning. Professor Bengio’s address delved into the significant risks associated with contemporary AI models, including their potential to bypass human control and be misused. To address these concerns, he introduced ‘Scientist AI,’ a novel model designed to mitigate such issues. Bengio explained, “Unlike models built to mimic or please humans, Scientist AI focuses on providing truthful answers grounded in verified facts and data,” underscoring its potential to bolster AI safety and accelerate scientific discovery. He also presented his latest research on leveraging AI for materials development.
Joining Professor Bengio as a keynote speaker was Stefano Ermon, a Professor at Stanford University and Co-founder of Inception, a startup that has been instrumental in the development of diffusion-based language models (DLM).
The forum also acknowledged the crucial role of AI in semiconductor manufacturing. EVP Song noted, “AI is already an essential tool in chip design and software development. As semiconductor manufacturing grows more complex, we expect AI to help address the technical challenges that arise.”
In recognition of outstanding contributions to the field, the Samsung AI Researcher of the Year award was presented to three distinguished academics: Professor Nicolas Papernot of the University of Toronto, Professor Rose Yu of the University of California San Diego, and Professor Lerrel Pinto of New York University. Each recipient was invited to present their work and share insights from their latest research.
Day Two of the forum, scheduled for September 16, will be hosted online by Samsung’s Device eXperience (DX) Division and streamed live on Samsung Developer’s YouTube channel. The theme for the second day is ‘Generative to Agentic AI,’ exploring the evolution and future trajectory of AI.
Paul (Kyungwhoon) Cheun, CTO of the DX Division at Samsung Electronics and Head of Samsung Research, commented on the advancements: “Generative AI has already become an essential tool across daily life and industries. As we enter the era of Agentic AI, Samsung will continue to focus on developing AI technologies that provide users with tangible benefits.”
