TLDR: Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff is actively questioning other CEOs about the role of AI in recent large-scale layoffs, asserting that artificial intelligence primarily augments human capabilities rather than replacing jobs. Despite Salesforce’s own significant automation efforts, Benioff predicts AI will lead to a surge in small business creation and a ‘digital labor revolution,’ emphasizing human oversight and the need for ethical AI deployment.
Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff has publicly challenged the prevailing narrative that artificial intelligence is a primary driver of widespread job displacement, particularly in white-collar sectors. During recent discussions, including a visit to London and the 2025 AI for Good Global Summit, Benioff has directly questioned other CEOs about the specific AI technologies they are employing for large-scale layoffs. He maintains that AI serves as a powerful tool for workforce augmentation, enhancing human productivity and capabilities, rather than leading to mass unemployment.
Benioff’s perspective contrasts with that of some prominent AI executives, such as Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, who have warned of significant job losses due to AI. The Salesforce CEO stated, ‘I keep looking around, talking to CEOs, asking: what AI are they using for these big layoffs?’ He added, ‘I think AI augments people, but I don’t know if it necessarily replaces them.’ Internally, Salesforce has aggressively adopted AI agents, with the technology now handling approximately 85% of customer service inquiries and qualifying sales leads 40% faster than human workers. Overall, AI performs between 30% to 50% of Salesforce’s routine work across various departments, including engineering, analytics, customer support, and marketing.
Despite these automation initiatives, Benioff has not observed customers downsizing staff due to AI-driven productivity increases. While Salesforce has implemented a hiring pause for engineers, lawyers, and customer service roles in 2025 to integrate AI-powered gains, the company is simultaneously expanding its sales team by 1,000 to 2,000 positions. This expansion aims to support the growing adoption of AI among small and mid-sized businesses, which Benioff believes are poised for a significant boom due to AI-enabled capabilities. He anticipates an ‘explosion of small and medium businesses because they can do more, it’s easier to start one, you can create value more easily.’

Benioff also highlighted the current limitations of AI, noting that while Salesforce’s AI tools achieve around 93% accuracy in tasks like customer service, 100% accuracy is not yet realistic. He stressed the ongoing necessity of human oversight for fact-checking and strategic decision-making. Benioff frames the rise of AI as a ‘digital labor revolution’ that will bring about ‘everything from AI agents to robots,’ and he emphasized that CEOs must ensure their values are aligned with ethical AI deployment. Salesforce has also focused on reskilling existing employees, with over half of recent hires coming from internal transfers into AI-centric roles, prioritizing ‘human+AI collaboration’ through platforms like Agentforce.
