TLDR: Elon Musk, head of the US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), faces calls for resignation from his Royal Society fellowship. The controversy stems from allegations that DOGE, under Musk’s leadership, has drastically cut research funding and engaged in academic censorship, actions deemed detrimental to scientific freedom and innovation.
The scientific community is currently embroiled in a significant controversy surrounding Elon Musk’s continued fellowship with the Royal Society, the UK’s esteemed national academy of sciences. On July 18, 2025, it was revealed that the Royal Society has suggested Musk consider resigning from his fellowship, a move prompted by his alleged role in the Trump administration’s ‘attacks on research’ through the US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Musk, who was elected a Royal Society fellow in 2018 for his contributions to the space and electric vehicle industries, now faces widespread criticism. The core of the outcry stems from his position as head of DOGE, which is accused of drastically cutting research funding and implementing a regime of censorship within academia. These actions are viewed by many as a ‘direct threat to freedom of expression and academic freedom,’ according to reports.
Sir Paul Nurse, the Royal Society’s president-elect, initiated the suggestion for Musk’s resignation in May. This followed a period where Nurse had written to Musk in March, detailing the ‘extensive damage’ being inflicted upon science in the US by the Trump administration and urging him to ‘step in and reverse this tragedy.’ While Musk initially responded, stressing his commitment to science and requesting specifics, he reportedly failed to respond to further suggestions from Nurse regarding consultations with public sector scientists on the impact of these policies. On May 20, Nurse sent a follow-up letter, raising concerns from US scientists, including that ‘some of the proposed budget reductions appeared nonsensical,’ and reiterated the suggestion for Musk to consider resigning if he felt unable to assist.
Despite these mounting pressures and calls from other fellows and scientists for action against Musk due to alleged violations of the academy’s code of conduct, the Royal Society had initially decided against a formal investigation. A spokesperson for the Royal Society confirmed that Musk has not addressed the suggestion to consider resigning. While ‘sharp and opposing’ views were aired at a previous meeting, all parties reportedly agreed on the paramount importance of the global defense of science.

However, this stance has drawn sharp criticism from within the scientific community. Stephen Curry, an emeritus professor at Imperial College London, who organized an open letter signed by thousands, welcomed the correspondence but lambasted the academy for not taking a clearer and stronger stance. Curry stated, ‘I’m afraid once again the Royal Society has failed to stand by its own code of conduct,’ arguing they should have presented Musk with the option of fellowship termination if he did not align with their declared values. The debate underscores the complex intersection of science, politics, and ethics, highlighting the challenges scientific institutions face in today’s polarized world. The significant cuts to research funding orchestrated under Musk’s leadership and the alleged censorship efforts threaten to stifle innovation and progress across various scientific disciplines, including artificial intelligence.
