TLDR: Law firm Ropes & Gray is re-evaluating its cloud computing strategy to fully leverage generative AI in its 2025 Summer Associate program. The firm, which has historically relied on on-premises data storage, is shifting towards cloud integration to support its ‘bionic lawyer’ approach, combining human expertise with AI capabilities for enhanced legal services.
Ropes & Gray, a prominent law firm established in 1865, is undertaking a significant re-evaluation of its cloud computing strategy to optimize its generative artificial intelligence (AI) initiative for its 2025 Summer Associate program. This strategic shift aims to prepare the next generation of legal professionals for the evolving landscape of legal technology.
Historically, Ropes & Gray maintained a predominantly on-premises data storage policy, a common practice among legacy law firms. Their technological capabilities were largely confined to areas such as email and machine learning for e-discovery, with annual training sessions introducing summer associates to these tools. However, a pivotal change occurred in 2023 when the firm began actively testing generative AI, a sophisticated form of AI capable of creating original content. This move was not merely a technological upgrade but, as Edward Black, senior counsel and technology strategy leader at Ropes & Gray, described it, a ‘cultural shift’ within the firm. Black noted to Law360 Pulse that generative AI enables a ‘bionic lawyer,’ leading to ‘running faster, better output, lower cost.’
The firm’s vision for generative AI involves redefining its legal service model to integrate ‘the best of humans plus the best of machines.’ This innovative approach, however, necessitates a greater reliance on cloud computing, which involves the remote storage and processing of data. This contrasts with Ropes & Gray’s traditional on-premise data management. The firm acknowledges that most contemporary legal AI tools on the market are designed to operate within a cloud environment.

The American Lawyer also highlighted Ropes & Gray’s commitment to equipping future lawyers with practical AI skills through its summer associate training. The article detailed how summer associates participated in ‘GenAI workshops,’ known as ‘Tech Jams,’ and directly engaged with the firm’s legal AI platforms on real client matters. Summer associate Kanika Chitnis, for instance, worked on a project to train AI to extract key provisions from contracts for the firm’s real estate practice. Chitnis expressed gratitude for Ropes & Gray’s proactive stance, stating, ‘I was so grateful to be at Ropes, [which is] not just reacting to AI, but embracing it.’ Black further emphasized that these AI training initiatives are a direct response to evolving client expectations for increased efficiency and value, remarking, ‘This is where the market is moving.’
