In a significant stride towards digital inclusion, ASSIST Software and Ștefan cel Mare University of Suceava (USV) have officially unveiled ‘A(I)BILITIES’, a groundbreaking artificial intelligence project designed to revolutionize digital accessibility for individuals with disabilities. This initiative, powered by advanced generative AI technologies, seeks to create adaptive and personalized user experiences, thereby transforming how digital services are developed and delivered across Romania and Europe.
The project directly addresses the increasing risk of exclusion for people with disabilities as digital services become more integral to daily life. A(I)BILITIES proposes an innovative approach to accessibility, where digital interfaces are designed to learn, adapt, and evolve based on each user’s specific needs. Instead of static accessibility tools, the project utilizes sophisticated AI models to dynamically generate user interfaces that accommodate various physical and sensory impairments. Key features include gesture-based input and adaptive design components, continuously personalized through user interaction.
This ambitious undertaking is strategically aligned with the European Accessibility Act (EAA), which is set to be fully enforced across EU member states starting in 2025. The EAA mandates that essential digital services, such as e-commerce platforms, banking applications, e-books, and public sector websites, must be accessible to people with disabilities, reflecting the EU’s broader commitment to digital inclusion and equal access to information and technology. The A(I)BILITIES project serves as a proactive and comprehensive response to these regulatory requirements.
ASSIST Software, a Suceava-based technology company with over three decades of experience in developing cutting-edge digital solutions for global clients, coordinates the A(I)BILITIES project. The company is responsible for the technical implementation, including backend development, data collection, AI model training, and validation. The development team operates from ASSIST Software’s newly established AI Center in Suceava, one of Romania’s most modern facilities of its kind. This center is designed for innovation and functionality, featuring creative meeting rooms, VR/AR experience spaces, and writable walls, fostering an environment for collaborative problem-solving. The engineers developing AI solutions at ASSIST Software are notably Stanford and Microsoft Azure certified, and the company was recognized among the best Romanian companies for AI and machine learning by Clutch in 2024.

Professor Vatavu’s team contributed critical insights into gesture accessibility, which were instrumental in shaping ‘Gesture-A11Y’, a design tool developed for and with users of diverse abilities. This tool garnered significant recognition, winning the Accessibility Challenge at the Web4All 2025 conference, underscoring the tangible impact of the research and knowledge generated through A(I)BILITIES on the field of inclusive design.
