TLDR: A recent report indicates a significant surge in AI adoption among retailers, with nearly half already leveraging AI daily or multiple times a week. A vast majority (97%) are committed to sustaining or increasing their AI investments this year. However, the widespread deployment of AI tools at scale remains limited, primarily due to challenges such as fragmented data, high implementation costs, and a shortage of technical expertise within organizations.
The retail industry is witnessing a rapid embrace of artificial intelligence technologies, despite persistent challenges in their full-scale implementation. According to the ‘2025 State of AI in Retail Report’ by Amperity, a substantial 45% of retailers are already integrating AI into their daily operations or utilizing it several times a week. This trend is set to continue, with an overwhelming 97% of retailers planning to either maintain or increase their current AI investments throughout the year.
While the commitment to AI is evident, the report highlights a notable gap between adoption and widespread deployment. Only a small fraction, 11%, of retailers are prepared to deploy AI tools at scale across their operations. The primary focus for AI integration currently lies in enhancing customer retention, with nearly two-thirds (63%) of retailers believing AI will improve customer loyalty and 65% expecting it to boost customer lifetime value. However, the actual application in customer-facing areas is still developing, as only 43% currently use AI for personalization, chatbots, or tailored marketing experiences. Furthermore, a mere 23% are leveraging AI in production environments for critical tasks like resolving customer identities or preparing data for marketing use.
Several significant barriers are impeding the broader adoption of AI in the retail sector. Data fragmentation stands out as a major hurdle, with 58% of respondents reporting their customer data as fragmented or incomplete. The high cost associated with AI tools is another considerable concern, cited by 46% of retailers. Additionally, 35% of organizations face limitations due to a lack of technical expertise. Compounding these issues, only 21% of retail professionals express high confidence in their ability to effectively understand and act upon customer data.
