Professor Sir Nigel Shadbolt to Lead New AI@Oxford Research Initiative

This strategic move is anticipated to enhance Oxford’s capacity for groundbreaking research and its influence on the future of artificial intelligence.

Professor Sir Nigel Shadbolt is a highly distinguished figure in the field of Artificial Intelligence. He is widely recognized as one of the originators of the interdisciplinary field of Web Science. Currently, he serves as the Principal of Jesus College Oxford and is a Professor of Computing Science at the University of Oxford. His extensive experience includes co-founding the Open Data Institute with Sir Tim Berners-Lee, and he was knighted in 2013 for his services to science and engineering.

In addition to his new role, Professor Shadbolt leads the Human Centred Computing theme within Oxford’s Department of Computer Science and holds the position of Senior Distinguished Scientist at the Oxford Institute for Ethics in AI. He also directs the Oxford Martin Programme on Ethical Web and Data Architectures, which focuses on reforming power concentration on the World Wide Web through new technical and legal frameworks.

Earlier in 2025, Professor Shadbolt was appointed to the UK Government’s Council for Science and Technology (CST), an advisory body to the Prime Minister and Cabinet on science and technology policy. At the time of that appointment, he expressed his commitment to leveraging his expertise to assist the CST, stating, “In an era where data and AI will be essential tools in augmenting government, boosting science and innovation, and creating economic and social value, I am totally committed to use my expertise to help the CST provide the advice that Government requires.” This sentiment aligns with the ambitious goals of the new AI@Oxford Research initiative.

Professor Shadbolt’s academic background includes a degree in Philosophy and Psychology from the University of Newcastle and a PhD in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Edinburgh. He has a prolific publication record with over 500 works, covering diverse topics from cognitive psychology to computational neuroscience and the Semantic Web. His book, “The Digital Ape: how to live (in peace) with smart machines,” published in 2018, was described as a ‘landmark book’. He is a Fellow of The Royal Society, the Royal Academy of Engineering, and the British Computer Society.
