POSCO Holdings Launches Industrial AI-Robot Challenge to Cultivate Future Manufacturing Talent

TLDR: POSCO Holdings has initiated the ‘POSCO Industrial AI-Robot Challenge,’ a competition designed for university and graduate students to develop AI-driven robotic solutions for the steel and energy materials sectors. With a prize pool of 37 million won and opportunities for recruitment, the event aims to enhance manufacturing competitiveness and foster an ‘Intelligent Factory’ vision through advanced AI and robotics.

POSCO Holdings, a leading global industrial conglomerate, has announced the launch of its ‘POSCO Industrial AI-Robot Challenge,’ a significant initiative aimed at bolstering manufacturing competitiveness and nurturing future technological talent. The competition, open to university and graduate students both domestically and internationally, focuses on the practical application of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics within the core business areas of the POSCO Group, including steel and energy materials production.

The challenge is structured into two main categories: the quadruped autonomous walking robot challenge and the multi-joint cooperative robot challenge (also referred to as the articulated robotic arm collaboration challenge). Participants are tasked with utilizing provided robots to complete various missions, thereby demonstrating their creativity and technical prowess in developing AI-based robotic systems.

Applications for the challenge were open from May 26 to June 30, 2025, with preliminary screenings leading to the selection of finalists. These teams are set to compete in the main competition, with the finals scheduled for September 9, 2025, at the POSCO Center.

The total prize money for the competition amounts to a substantial 37 million Korean won. Beyond monetary rewards, winning teams will also gain valuable opportunities for research project collaborations and receive additional points in future recruitment processes for POSCO DX, a key affiliate focusing on digital transformation.

POSCO Holdings emphasizes that the competition is more than just a contest; it’s a platform for students to confront real-world industrial problems and develop strategic solutions. To support participants, POSCO Holdings, in collaboration with experts from POSCO DX, will provide mentorship, robotics workshops, and knowledge-sharing sessions on the latest AI technology trends and industrial applications. These initiatives are designed to enhance participants’ technical skills and deepen their understanding of the industry.
